PocketGPSWorld Other/Articles Menu

Every now and then a strange urge comes over us and we write articles. Often there are about general aspects of SatNav, GPS or Mapping and do not really fit into one of our pre-defined categories. If you are looking to find out how the Digital Maps are made, or how SatNav technologies have improved or enabled new methods of working then this is where you will find them.

teleatlas-visit-aug05.php PocketGPSWorld.com visit Tele Atlas in Gent
The digital mapping companies come in for a lot of criticism from the GPS user community. In particular there have been a lot of issues with missing roads, roads with the wrong names, bad junctions, and turn restrictions etc etc. There was a lot of concern in the forums with the currency of the latest TomTom maps released with version 5 software. We wanted to put these issues to Tele Atlas and get some answers from them. At the same time we also wanted to discover the process that Tele Atlas (and it

2004onwards.php A look back at 2003 and a look forward to 2004
Looking back at 2003, it really has been an exciting year in not only GPS but in the Pocket PC. Great strides have been made in all corners of the globe, and in technology. It only seems like yesterday when I was writing the 2003 and beyond article, and now we are staring 2004 straight in the eyes. Can a year really have gone that quickly ? So what did happen in 2003 ? And more importantly, what will we see in 2004 ?

amateurpilot.php GPS for the Amateur Pilot
Learning to fly is clearly one of the most demanding and enjoyable projects, with the normal objective of achieving a Private Pilots Licence (PPL). However most flying schools operate quite elderly aircraft without in-built GPS systems and PPL navigation training does not include GPS, nor is it encouraged as a

2003onwards.php What's in store for GPS and Pocket PC in 2003 and beyond ?
Well 2002 has been a great year both for the Pocket PC market, and for GPS. In 2000 and 2001 we only had a handful of Pocket PC manufacturers, last year (is it really last year ?) 2002 shows double, nearly treble the amount of Pocket PC manufacturers come onto the scene, including very large PC manufacturers like Dell and Toshiba, which only means one thing. The Pocket PC and future incarnations are here to stay, and in a very big way!
egnos.php EGNOS Status Update
I have now completed a couple of reviews recently with a few in progress with GPS receivers that are WAAS capable. In particular the Garmin GPSMAP 76 and the Emtac BT GPS (work in progress). There is currently a lot of controversy over the usefulness of EGNOS in Europe and the validity of using WAAS capable receivers in this mode.
aeroplane.php Aviation GPS Navigation
For me, one of the most fascinating parts of private flying is the process of planning a route, allowing for wind etc. and then actually arriving, on time. VFR flying, when you can see around you, involves the use of compass and map and allows the use of navigation aids, beacons etc. to verify position and distance. GPS is not part of a PPL programme, in plane equipment is rare in the older club/ hire aircraft and specialist aviation GPS equipment expensive.
helicopter.php Helicopter GPS Navigation
Patrice sent us an email and some photos of his current setup. Patrice flies a EuroCopter EC120 Colibri over in Monaco similar to the one pictured on the right. The EuroCopter EC120 is quite a commonly known helicopter and can be found used in all kinds of uses from industry, Offshore work, to training, Corporate and Law Enforcement. Patrice has been great to share his experience and setup he uses when flying the EuroCopter EC120.

As reported earlier by InfoSync.no. Few handheld manufacturers are as high-profile as the post-merger HP, which is the biggest Pocket PC player and has the largest handheld market share in the world - next after Palm, that is. With interest spiking as wireless connectivity is becoming increasingly common in handheld devices, it is therefore no surprise that information would eventually surface about HP
geocaching.php Geocaching for begginners
The first Geocaching website was believed to have been setup a couple of years ago, Geocaching is what is starting to be considered as an active sport. I suppose you could think of it as orienteering back in the old days where you would try to find a specific location armed with only a map and a compass, but Geocaching is somewhat updated. You go armed with a GPS Receiver and the hunger for the adventure. Geocaching is a treasure hunt, you get given a co-ordinate to find or go to, and clues will then take you to another location. Eventually after visiting numerous locations, you should be able to find a stash of cache, which can contain anything from lego blocks, to sweets, to little toys, to coins.

wtc.php The World Trade Center Clear Up
What happened a little over a year ago created a big wake up call the not only American citizens, but to citizens the world over. The attacks that were carried out were atrocious, the attackers were cowards, and the loss of life and privacy is just utterly sad. People are still mourning their loved ones a year on, and for many it has come at a great expense.
