I'm looking to add memory map to my ipaq (already usefully using TomTom 3). I'm wondering whether to buy now or wait a month or so.
From comments on this site, memory map 2004 was launched in March last year - does anyone have any ideas if we can expect a new version in March 2005?
thanks _________________ -----------------------

This is a difficult question to answer. Currently Memory-Map are still releasing fixes to the 2004 version, this could mean nothing, or could mean that the next version is some way off yet.
I was talking to Memory-Map at the London Boat Show the other week and despite some direct questions about the next release of software no answers were forthcoming.
The difficulty is that if you buy 2004 software then the maps will not be compatible with 2005. This is a restriction insisted on by the Ordnance Survey, so if you do decide to go for say one region of 2004 and buy 2005 later the 2 maps will not be compatible. _________________ Mike Barrett |

Hi,
Correct me if I am wrong, but does this mean that if I upgrade to the next version whenever it appears, that I will have to buy all the maps again?
If so that must be a significant discouragement to anyone upgrading if they have more than one or two maps?

You are not wrong. You will still be able to use the 2004 maps with the 2004 application, but the 2005 maps will not work on with the 2004 application, nor will the 2004 maps work with the 2005 application.
This is true of all companies that use Ordnance Survey map data. It is a restriction placed on the companies by Ordnance Survey. _________________ Mike Barrett |
