If you are doing a backup via the CD Setup, it will only contain the additional files, compared to the original sd, like added poi's, personal settings, activation files, etc.
Anything that can be re-installed from CD will not be in the backup. That's why your backup will only be a few kbs.

The real backup, like rkm_hm mentions, can only be done by manually copying the complete SD content.

That's absolutely right - and particularly important when the supplied SD card had a later version of the application (and probably maps, too) than was on the supplied CD, as mine did! [All in the same box].

Ok - so let me get this right...

In future copy the entire SD card not do just a backup.

TTG Support are sending me a new installation CD but from what I am reading this will not be enough to get the card working again with all the proper maps etc. on it?

If not do I have to purchase a new GB Map on SD again?

As it is still under warranty and the card became corrupted I do feel that if this is the case it should be a straightforward replacement from TTG. I guess I may be hoping too much!

If you've got an up-to-date CD, you can load both the application and the map onto an SD card from that so - strictly speaking - you don't need a full backup.- you just need to backup your personal customisations, which running the backup program from the CD should achieve.

It's when you haven't got an up-to-date CD - like where you have downloaded an upgrade, or if the CD supplied is an ealier version than what was on the SD card (as in my case) - that a full backup is invaluable.

If TomTom are sending you a new CD, that will hopefully have the 4.42 application and the UK maps on it - in which case all you need is a useable blank SD card to install it on. If your card is duff, you'll need a new one. If TomTom won't give you one, you can buy a blank card for peanuts anyway. [I paid about £16 for a 256MB card from 7-day Shop]

Once you've installed the application and maps, you should be able to restore your backup to get all your favourites etc. back.

Thanks - that sounds more re-assuring. I was thinking of getting a bigger SD card anyway so now might be an opportune time.
