A report of the UK's most active speed cameras between January 1 2016 to May 31 2018 has been published.
I'm unsure had to how much accurate information can be garnered from it though. GoCompare, the insurance comparison website, sent Freedom of Information requests to the UK's 45 police forces, but received just 24 replies - of which only 16 gave a full breakdown of results.
However, it still may be statistically interesting that of those 16 sets of information, it was shown that out of the top 10, Avon and Somerset populated the first 8 spots.
This appears to confirm that, compared to other jurisdictions, they do have the most active cameras in the country - many counties have cameras that are inactive due to policy, economic or maintenance issues.
The Top 10:
1 Avon & Somerset M32 Severn Beach rail line overbridge to end of M32 southbound. Year recorded: 2018. Offences: 22,350
9 Bedfordshire M1 motorway. Year recorded: 2016. Offences: 10,339
10 Bedfordshire A1081 Airport Way south-westbound. Year recorded: 2017. Offences: 10,024
The number of speeding offences recorded by theses cameras has declined from 115,814 in 2016 to 105,983 in 2017.
The report suggests this reduction has more to do with the maximum speeding penalty being raised (to a life sentence for fatal incidents) as opposed to general public compliance.
A spokesman for Avon and Somerset Police said: "Speeding can have fatal consequences. It endangers the lives of other road users. We don’t want to catch people speeding – we want people to obey the speed limits. I hope this statistic acts as a warning to others that all speed limits are being proactively enforced and makes them slow down."
