|
|
Was uploading new map and now it hangs hangs half way through loading maps stage. Spoke with Garmin but not much help but at least they answer the phone on supporting an old product. The computer MAY have powered down during the update but shouldn't have as its set for longer than the map update time. All I know is it was powered down when I returned.
Possibly important info....
I have full Europe & US maps.
US is on 770 memory, Europe on the SD card.
It was Europe I was updating.
When I plug into PC neither the 770 or SD register as disks.
Garmin Express doesn't see it unsurprisingly.
I deleted all the files on the SD and re-formatted and the PC then sees both 770 and SD.
Garmin express and webupdater tools tell me all software is up to date.
When I try to power on the unit it still stalls half way through 'loading maps'
I re-loaded Europe onto the SD and made sure it completed but it still stalls half way through 'loading maps' and still only recognises on the PC when the SD card is removed.
Only other info is that the battery is shagged, New one ordered but it doesn't boot up even when powered from the car holder.
I'm about to format and try another SD card just in case but highly sceptical given the above.
Any clues or way forward folks? |

As expected, using a different SD card gave the same results.
I should have also added that both soft resets and clearing user data had no effect
Feels like the OS has got affected somewhere along the way? Or a file missing? |

A device that 'hangs' is normally caused by a corrupted file, given that you were updating maps and your PC may have powered down that is the likely cause. It's also possible a software update was being installed, which might also have been corrupted.
As you can get access to it when the sd card is removed, I'd try removing the map files from the device, at least those that indicate they've been altered recently. Also check for a file named gupdate.gcd, and if that has also been installed recently then delete it.
Then see what happens ... _________________ Where there's a will ... there's a way. |

Thamks. The GUPDATE.GCD is dated 2012.
Files dated since I started the update are
.express EXPRESS File
GarminDevice XML document
gmapprom.gma
gmapprom Disc Image File
gmapprom.unl
clm.nvm
Also current.gpx in the GPX directory
Delete all these? |

Don't recognise clm.nvn, so first try deleting the express file and the .xml file
Check the xml file isn't 0kb in size, if it is also check how much free space there is as that would normally indicate a lack of free space on the device. _________________ Where there's a will ... there's a way. |

OK, much time taken because disks were repeatedly not being recognised. Multiple soft resets and clearing data and eventually I've deleted all the files recently added.
Nothing worked up until I deleted the big map image file which should be the US maps on the PND memory because I'd removed the SD card.
Finally it booted up but the weird thing was the unit should now no longer have any maps stored in it but it brought up a US map then once it found satellites it located its position on some Eur map???????????
How can it do that? My Eur map SD card wasn't even inserted? Are there old / hidden images it can retrieve?
Along the way cln.nvm and GarminDevice kept reappearing - not sure what generates them?
Anyway, I am now back to a working PND. Thanks for inputs. |

GarminDevice.xml is created on boot up if one doesn't exist.
If it's still reading maps then you must have some on the device somewhere. Normally on these older devices the maps will be in the Garmin folder, just look for any files ending in .img _________________ Where there's a will ... there's a way. |
