Many areas off Bristol are now 20 mph. The latest addition is the Kingsway which went to 20mph on Friday 27th so watch out until the database is updated it will still show 30 mph warning. The new speed has been submitted

Here's another haphazard, expensive introduction of the 20mph limit.

HM Government are as usual, really crafty over this - pass the authority to introduce 20mph speed limits to Local Councils with the sound bite comment that it enables local involvement and expertise.

In fact, what it means is that the local council gets to foot the bill for it - all the legal stuff, advertising and publicity, all the costs of the new signs.

If it had been a government change of the national speed limit to 20mph, there would have been none of this stupidity and no ambiguity about where the limit applies.

Bristol City Council's website doesn't actually mention Kingsway (unless my failing eyesight deceives me), nor does it mention the A431 which abuts Kingsway. If they have done the same as B&NES council, they will have left the A431 at 30mph. And yet those through roads like A431 are the very places where drivers currently break the 30mph limit regularly.

Pig's ears again. Rolling Eyes

According to the map it still says 30 mph. I contacted Bristol Council who told me that the repeater signs (200mm discs) were put up before the new limit came into force as they could not do everything on the day, then on the 27th March the larger road entry signs (400mm discs) and road markings were unveiled.
Having a speed limiter on the car makes it easy for me so I don't have to keep looking at the speedo so it will be interesting to see if there are fewer accidents there are due to the slower speed or how many more there are due to constantly looking at the speedo !!

What it means is that as it's not a Government diktat, they don't HAVE to do it. But when have councils been backward in spending our money on stupid ideas that do no good and p*** most people off?
