Perhaps they've based it on the USA $ purchase which gets tax added at purchase rather than the actual UK price you paid?

Very likely but they managed the other 4 refunds I didn't want without US tax. Not complaining about getting more back than I paid but it's just another example of how badly Apple have handled a straightforward refund.
