|
|
Did my first long journey with my recently acquired Go 540 and the new navcore 9.058 and it performed pretty well (much to my surprise).
I do have a question though. Do the new navcore (or the x40 model as opposed to the x20) maintain satellite lock when switched off?
Having stopped once on the trip there (for around 10 minutes) and once at the destination (six hours) on powering the device back on the satellite lock was instant. I have just powered it up again about 20 metres from where it was powered off last night and, again, the lock was instant and the location shown had moved from the car to inside the house (a bungalow which does get GPS lock indoors).
It seems a strange function to implement because of the battery drain involved but it would explain why the battery has run dowh in about three days of non-use when the 520 would hold its charge for a period of weeks rather than days.
Has anyone else noticed this? Is it configurable - I can't find anything in the menus?
(and the connection to the live services still takes several minuts!) _________________ TomTom Go 540 - V9.058, Map GB & Ireland 860.3101

No. A combination of QuickFix and the fact the unit was only switched off for a short period would explain the quick fix. Also GPS has an accuracy of about 10 meters so moving 20 meters won't cause it any problems.
Mine can get a fix in under 2 seconds after being off for days if it is switched on outside whilst on the drive rather than in the office.
I also suspect the receiver on the x40 is more sensitive than that in the x20 which further helps.
As for the battery I dont know. Everyone I know with a sat Nav complains about the battery life! Maybe again the x40 has a smaller battery.
Edit: spelling

No, they don't maintain GPS location actively when off. But they do use QuickFix which enables much faster lock than older designs.
Most modern GPS devices can achieve lock from cold in under 20 secs and Quickfix speed this up. _________________ Darren Griffin |

So presumably the 540 has a better/different/improved GPS chipset / firmware than the older 520 which never locked as quickly (it has quickfix as wel) so it can lock while the TomTom splash screen is displayed.
Some things do improve! _________________ TomTom Go 540 - V9.058, Map GB & Ireland 860.3101

As far as I recall, the x40's use the same chipset but they will of course also have the benefit of A-GPS using the GSM radio. That will also speed up fix. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Excess battery drain is a long-standing issue on these models too. |
