No red cross at my end either.. It has to be a caching issue.
Generally it is ISP caching that is the problem. Done to speed up browsing through their servers.
Given time it will clear. _________________ Ian.

I've been having the red cross problem for well over a week. I decided to replace my avatar with one from my hard drive - it met all the parameters specified ie max 64x64 and max 6k - but with no luck. I've tried refreshing the page as suggested on this thread but it's still there.
Are you guys seeing the red cross? - Probably not from the responses to date. So I suppose I'll have to wait for it to disappear and then try uploading again. _________________ Tony

Thanks for that, Fletch - I've done as you suggest and at least it's cleared the red cross from my profile page, so hopefully as in your case it will disappear from the forum pages in due course. _________________ Tony

Well I firmly believed that after reading the post regarding the Red X that this problem was to do with my PC. We're at my daughters today and although I've had a several glasses of very nice wine I'm still seeing Red X's on this thread. I can see it on Mearns posting.
So I'm just as confused and No it's not the booze.
Any other suggestions
Regards

Hi Mike,
No it's not the booze. I see a red X too.
I am on a different PC with a direct connection so on this occasion I think that the link to Mearn's avatar may be wrong!
It should be http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/modules/Forums/images/avatars/
or to wherever the image is stored.
Therefore the browser can't find the image to display it, hence it shows the X. _________________ Ian.

I knew I knew I wasn't drunk and the PC I was on was new.
I'm back on my own PC now and it's still happening, I've done everything that has been suggested, deleted TI files, Cookies, History etc but still to no avail
I've not got to the stage of tearing hair out cos there ain't a lot of that left but I think I might have another drink, seeing as it's Fathers Day and leave it to the experts Happy Days
Regards
alfieB
PS, I've suddenly thought where I've seen this Red X before and it happens with Navman e-mails. At the very end of their e-mail is a legend saying "this message is confidential etc." and that has a Red X there as well _________________ Why ask me ?, I'm lost!

Just for amusement I copied your avatars into Photoshop - no problem. Then I copied the X in my post and nothing showed in Photoshop because the graphic doesn't exist!! Looking at the properties of the X it just gives the URL of this site, nothing else. _________________ Tony

Mearns, I have fixed your avatar.
As said before, Avatar's are limited by 64 pixels by 64 pixels. You have to link to Avatar's off-site, and not to a hard disk. The max size is 6144 bytes. Providing you save it as a GIF format, and comply with these settings, the Avatar will show. |

Thanks Dave......still confused though.......what does "Upload Avatar from your machine" mean in Profiles? I had taken that to mean I could use "Browse" to select a gif file from my hard drive and upload it as an avatar, but if I understand you correctly it has to link to a file stored on a web site? _________________ Tony

Tony,
"Upload Avatar from your machine" means you can browse your drive for a suitable gif image and, provided it is within the limits of 64 pixels by 64 pixel and a max size of 6144 bytes, upload it to the forum server and display it as your avatar.
"Link to a file stored on a web site" means if you know the path to an image on a website you can use that as an avatar provided it is within the limits as above.

That's it - I give up! Dave cleared the X so I tried to upload a 64x64 GIF, 4K in size and all I got was the damn X back. So I'll just live with that - there are more important things to do! I should have kept the original avatar I uploaded last August - had no trouble with that one. _________________ Tony

I suspect there's a problem within the image itself, mail me the image and I'll take a look. |
