|
|
Picked this up on the wires this morning. As a result of the Egyptian Government issuing a ban on the sale and use of GPS systems 5 years back, iPhone's used in Egypt will have access to the GPS function disabled.
An Apple knowledge base article here states that "GPS is not available while in Egypt or when using an Egyptian iPhone", and goes on to clarify as follows:- iPhones purchased in Egypt do not have GPS enabled
- iPhones purchased in Egypt and used outside of Egypt do not have GPS enabled
- iPhones used whilst roaming in Egypt do not have GPS enabled
- Unlocked iPhones used with Egyptian SIMs do not have GPS enabled
Quite how this function is being disabled is not yet known, it may be as simple as having the firmware switch off GPS when an Egyptian carrier is detected. Egypt classes GPS as a military grade technology and now bans the import and sale of all GPS equipped devices without a licence. Use of a GPS is only permitted after approval from security authorities.
A worrying trend? _________________ Darren Griffin |

Aye, yet another iPhone limitation.
I so much wanted one of these but life's too short to be kept waiting. Touch HD ordered. |

This does raise the question about mobile phones that have GPS built in such as the N95....Would they be confiscated? _________________ iPhone5, TomTom, Google maps, Navfree, Viewranger and Apple Maps (ekk) |

Ever been there?
If you have ever driven from Cairo to Taba as we did, there are signs everywhere about entering smaller roads and how it is all military.
It is a great country, but a greater fear of being overrun by its neighbours. _________________ iPhone5, TomTom, Google maps, Navfree, Viewranger and Apple Maps (ekk) |

In my experience you'd have to be mental to want to drive there. Not a place where road markings are used for anything but decoration !!
You really need to keep your eyes on the road at all times to watch out for.... donkey and carts in the fast lane....people stopping to have a brew up on the hard shoulder.....walking at night on a dual carriage road.... drivers at night without ANY lights on.... cars entering a dual carriageway on the off slip road on-comming...... to name but a few that I've witnessed
No one has ever mentioned anything to me about GPS not being allowed in Egypt. Now I know _________________ "A good scientist is a person with original ideas. A good engineer is a person who makes a design that works with as few original ideas as possible"
Garmin Nuvi 3598 + GO 720 (+USA Map Card) + NavFree for iPhone in case all else fails ;-) |

hello all
The iPhone has launched in Egypt through two separate carriers, reports say. Vodafone has unveiled four different plans, priced at 150, 250, 350 and 550 EGP, respectively.
thanks
