It makes sense why your unit was bugged if you had the same map on an SD card. Each map has a 3 digit product code (e.g city navigator europe v9 i believe it has 197) If you unit was seeing 2 maps with the same number it got confused.
Did you also have to generate an unlock code with mapsource gmapprom.unl ?
If mapsource gets too confusing to generate that file you can easily make it if you have the code by copying it to notepad and save it as gmapprom.unl
As for route calculations between countries that are not included in the maps, garmin uses its basemap (gmapbap.img) which includes some basic main roads from all over the world. The basemap is not searchable, but all its roads are routable. The details on the basemap are very limited though and it will only guide you through main motorways.
You can view the basemap if you disable all the maps from the settings menu.
On my nuvi 760 it seems to be fairly detailed on europe and it has some roads at asia, africa and australia but not america.
On my previous nuvi 350 the basemap had some roads of america as well. |

Depends on what you mean by searchable!
On my 660 with 2008NT I can select (for example) Cape Town (S. Africa) as a destination city - but it fails to route there as it runs out of memory.
You can display the location on the map of course.
If people have bought their unit in/from USA then it won't have the European base map. I don't know if this gets installed as part of an upgrade to 2008NT or only by a full install from the non-upgrade disc. _________________ Phil |

Wow, all interesting information - and which I can't help but think Garmin should document in the user manual somewhere.
For info, there is no .unl file on my Nuvi. _________________ Garmin Nuvi 2445LM |
