Hi,
I am looking for a bluetooth GPS receiver with Datalogger that can be used as navigation at the same time as data logging.
I would prefer something with MTK chipset and good battery life.
Grateful for any suggestions / recommendations. |

What do you mean Quote: | that can be used as navigation |
The Zycast 289 has a BT variant (I own one) that is based on Sirf III and is very good and very sensitive - see review here by Darren . I regularly walk with it in my jacket pocket / rucsack and it never fails to log my position. With BT enabled you can use it with PDA / Mobile based navigation s/w.
It has a basic display showing LAT/Long/Alt.
I also have a NaviGPS BGT-11. This is not as sensitive as the Zycast 289 but it does allow you to load waypoints/routes etc and use it as a basic handheld GPS. I would (overall) not recommend purchase of this particular device if sensitivity is a prime objective. _________________ Phil |

sorry, I should have been more clear:
GPS that can log data while at the same time providing directions in TomTom software while driving.
I will mainly use the gps in my car while driving with my ipaq running TomTom. |

Put Fransons GPS Gate on the PDA and use that application to feed the GPS data to the TT application and data log using the Franson application running in the background, it works very well - Mike |

The Zycast 289 is a standard BlueTooth logger / GPS. It will log your position AND work as a BT GPS without the need for additional software. _________________ Phil |

Hi Phil,
How do you find the Zycast 289??, I am in the market for a powerful yet flexible logger and this pretty much fits the bill.
It looks good on paper, but following Darrens review there have been several adverse reports on bluetooth connections, battery charging and a non existent support from the manufacturer!! By the sound of it you find yours OK?? Any problems to report or does it do what it says on the box.
Cheers,
John |

I still highly rate my 289. I have never had any issue pairing it (although I don't own a Nokia phone) with any of my laptops or PocketPC's and it is still the best and easiest data-logger I have used.
So long as you don't need to use it with a Nokia phone i would have no hesitation in recommending it. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Hi,
I use a 289 data logger and it works very well. The construction is a little doggy though. The first machine ran until I had to recharge the battery, when I kept getting a battery overheating warning. I returned it the the supplier who immediately replaced it. I used it regularly for a few months and then lost it. I bought a replacement which after initially running simply refused to recharge - no error report this time, just would not turn on. Again the supplier replace it and so far it has worked fine.
The sceeen co-ordinates are fixed at WGS84, as is the NMEA output to the card. While it is easy to convert the co-ords on a PC, the data is of little use in the wilds using OS maps. That doesn't bother me because I use a Garmin for navigation.
I have failed miserably to connect via the bluetooth either on a laptop or desk top - in both cases using the same USB bluetooth dongle. Please, will someone tell me which the make of the USB dongle they are using?
Finally, I agree that the manufacurer's web site is useless |

You have enabled Bluetooth before you try to pair? _________________ Darren Griffin |

Thanks Darren,
This is my first venture into using Bluetooth. I think I have enabled it. The PC certainly finds the SG289 as it is shown in the list of devices. It will also attempt to pair the two. But I get with one computer "Detection of service failed" and on the other, "Windows unable to exchange pass keys with your device". I can pair with a mobile phone.
Although I don't actually need the Bluetooth connection as I use a wired USB GPS receiver in my car I am driven (excuse the pun) to get it going. I thought that I might cut out one variable by using a known "good" GPS receiver. Hence my question. Though I'll certainly investigate any other suggestions. |

Ah ok, I had to ask just in case! It could be the USB dongle, it depends what BT Stack it uses, lesser known units can be problematic. _________________ Darren Griffin |

I use my 289 regularly when walking - just as a logger as I have a GARMIN handheld for the navigation aspect. I have connected it to my DELL AXIM and Nokia 6680 devices with no problems. I will try it with my laptop for which I have a generic no-name dongle, with MS BT stack - which works well enough with my phones. _________________ Phil |

It's a long while since I used a BT dongle, the last one was a Belkin PCMCIA card version. ALl my current hardware has BT built-in. _________________ Darren Griffin |
