well I read the TomTom wishlist and added full postcode searches to the Smart ST wishlist. Then I tried postcode searches on www.map24.com which is powered by Tele Atlas.

Using full postcode searches on map24, a pushpin is placed in the map with remarkable accuracy. I wonder if this is provided by a Tele Atlas database?

If it is, surely this could be added to the PPC navigation software??

I believe they are using TeleAtlas for the complete maps and geodata.

The problem is when you take a look at for instance Western European for 15-21 countries you are looking at around 2 CD's and all though these aren't fully compressed, they are not uncompressed either. On average around 1.5 CD's of data.

To get these onto the Pocket PC some data does have to be left out, others get crunched in compression techniques all to be able to get a complete country down to below 100mb in size.

Although storage is getting larger and cheaper for Pocket PC's, there's still a long way to go before we all are carrying around a minimum of a Gigabyte drive (yeah some of us do more than that!) Wink but until then heavy compression, and choosing to leave out some features that they can include has to still happen. I'm not sure what level it's chosen to reduce specific things like postcode support, or to remove it completely but there are various things that can be done to reduce map sizes.

I'm sure we will see more accurate data in postcode support and mapping support going forward as storage sizes grow and become even more cheaper. Personally I'd much rather have a 500mb map with all the data in than a poorly compressed map with half of the data missing.
