If this helps anyone... With the default bit of aerial wire, reception on my Sony was more or less non-existent. I took the telescopic aerial from a defunct portable FM radio, approx. 18in long. To the bottom of this (which had a hole for a small nut) I attached the end of the TMC aerial wire, having stripped the insulation from the last inch or so. I fixed the aerial wire horizontally along the base of the windscreen with its suction cups in the normal way; the telescopic aerial I extended at right angles from this, vertically up the passenger edge of the window, its tip simply pushed under the sun visor (which can still be lowered and raised normally).
Result: instant and apparently perfect TMC reception, on one day's experience anyway (Buckinghamshire/west London).
DIY skill level: minimal.
Time involved: about two minutes' fiddling.
Total cost: nil.
It's a bit Heath Robinsonish but I'm a happy bunny ;-)
You've stumbled over the solution I posted in answer to your question about this on another thread. Which kind of implies it's a good way of doing it! Glad it works!
