I have a nokia 3230 smartphone with tomtom mobile5 installed.
Without using bluetooth, how can I get tomtom to work with a gps receiver via a cable?
Is this possible?
Thanks,

Physically it would connect - but you would need to put a null-nodem between the phone and the GPS serial connector as both devices expect to talk to a PC. Basically you need to swap the recieve and transmit cables around (Pins 2 and 3) on one of the cables only. You can buy these devices at most places that deal with serial cables.
After that it would be a matter of finding out if the application on the 'phone can attach to the COM port associated with the serial device on the phone. It may be that it is reserved for use by the phone's synch operation and not available for others apps.
To be honest it's not a very elegant solution. BT is the way to go - a cheap BT receiver would cost about the same as the two cables and null modem required. |

There are many phones with a serial cable. So yes you can connect physically.
But will it work? I do not think so.
I do not think there is any software that can use the serial port on the phone to connect a GPS.
That was why: "as far as I know no phone, whatever the make, can connect any GPS with a cable"
New software may change that. _________________ Pc-Mobile
