|

Hi Folks, Got my street pilot i3 recently (city select v7). After reading posts on here I sent garmin an email asking about product registration and how I could get from V7 to V8 city select.
They sent me a coupon code (which I used to register) which then gave me a 25 digit unlock code.
My question to you clever peeps is now what do I do? Am I right in guessing that when city select v8 is released for update download I will be able to obtain it with my unlock code? If not then what do I do with it?
Congrats on this brilliant forum.
Thanx in advance

No one but Garmin knows what will happen with the i3 v7 to v8 upgrade. In the past, the upgrades have been free if you brought your unit after a certain date but as far as I know there has been no formal announcement about the upgrade being free or paid for for the i3.
There are i3 units shipping with v7 and v8 maps at the moment so I would guess that Garmin will probably offer free upgrades to address this inconsistency.
People have said that Garmin say that you might have to send your memory card back to Garmin for reprogramming rather than being sent a CD.
As far as I know they have never allowed people to download the update via the web. It has always been via a CD in the post but this was before they preloaded maps on memory cards like they do with the i3.
If you have the City Select v8 CD then you may be able to enter your unlock code and upload the new maps to the i3, possibly for any area in Europe. As far as I know, no one has the CD though, only maps preloaded on the memory card.
Just wondering, when they sent you the 25 digit unlock code, did it say "Deluxe" anywhere in the email referring to the unlock code? In the old days, this referred to a full European unlock code... _________________ Gone fishing! |

Hi Skippy,
Thanks for your reply. Yes it does say it's a deluxe unlock code. This is a part of the email I recieved :-
Information about the region you just unlocked:
-GPS Unit: UNKNOWN
-Serial #: ********
-MapSource Product: City Select Europe NT v7 Deluxe Unlock
-Region: City Select Europe NT v7 Deluxe All, May 05
-Action: Unlock Registration
-CouponCode: ********
Do you think I've been lucky?
Thanks again

In the past, some Garmin units were sold with a single region unlock code and you chose the region to unlock when registered the product. You could also buy an optional upgrade unlock code called "Deluxe" or "All regions". It appears to me that this is what you (and a few other i3 users) have.
IF you could get the CS NT v7 CD then you may be able to unlock all regions with your deluxe all code and upload the regions you choose. It's a bit academic because Garmin don't appear to supply the "City Select NT v7" version of the City Select CDs just the older "City Select v7" with the same map data but in a different format.
However, if you can get hold of the older City Select v7 cd (it shipped with a number of Garmin units) you could try unlocking it using your code and uploading the maps. I don't know what would happen and I can't help you find the CD either.
Something to keep an eye on and see what happens. Who knows what Garmin will do.... _________________ Gone fishing! |
