i sometimes wonder why when people ask these type of questions and dont get a definitive reply,why they themselves dont try it out and then report back to the forum with an answer instead of a question....just my 2 pence .....

I have wondered the same thing. I don't know why it wouldn't work.
Park the car, mark the point, turn off the gps, go hiking, turn on the gps and get a fix of the current location, view map (don't navigate) zoom in and/or out on the map to see where the car is on the map in relation to the current location.
I have the I5 and when viewing a map when it isn't navigating it shows the current speed and the direction of travel.

Relevancy rating 3/10, but here goes. Traveling ftom Shiel Bridge to Glenelg over Mam Ratagan whilst on navagation mode i3 shows the 'exact location' of my posistion as way off the road, indeed if I were to try and follow the arrow and not the road I reckon I would be either half way up the mountain or in the loch below. But hey! I've got eyes and no machine is going to fool me into thinking my Pug 206 is a 4X4 with a parachute.
Back to the point, I think the i3 maybe confused by the hills hiding the satelite signals and therefore may not be as accurate as required for hillwalking and the like. I know there is models out there for hill walking etc. but I don,t think the i3 is one of them. |

I don't believe hills would hamper the reception. You get excellent reception in hills, what's worse is in City Cnetre streets with high buildings each side of the road. You can see far more sky when mountaineering than when walking down the high street.
So it definitely will place the arrow where you are then, and not on the nearest road. That's all I need to know. So I could walk up a mountain, and know exactly where I am, and zoom out to see the nearest road, or the marker I saved for where I parked the car. |

On my I5 it shows current location. We have new roadways at a new shopping center around here and the arrow just shows you in a field with the nearby old streets easily identifiable. |
