i3 speed readout

how come you get a mph/kmh speed bit on the i3 screen before you program a destination and start navigation but after you start navigating the speed readout disappears?

in map mode you get the speed and compass and in navigation mode you get the arrial time and turn distance.......this is the way garmin have decided to have it .....
