Hi just got one of these things from staples but it only has the 2.3 firmware installed, the answer may be obvious to others but do I have to switch the unit on when I have it plugged in to my computer. Will I have the option of installing the 2.5 firmware as I have read in the forum of problems with the 2.6 firmware.
P.s I am of the older generation and do not know much about computers!!!

Had a go but it just tells me there is no usb device detected and a "new found Wizzard " or something is telling me to insert the disc that came with the hardware when I have installed the program on the computer already !
I will wait until son no2. comes to se me and let him do it in case I damage it
btw its switched itself on when i plugged the usb cable in and when I unplugged it it went into countdown mode after having it's external power supply disconected.
I realy am not clued up much on computers!!.

Before you connect the i3 to your computer you need to install the Garmin USB driver which you can get from this link http://www.garmin.com/support/collection.jsp?product=010-00434-00
Only after you have installed the driver should you connect the i3 (although it won't do any damage doing so before, your PC just won't recognise it).
Once you've installed the USB driver, then connect the i3 and, as you say, it will switch itself on, then update the firmware to v2.6 which you can get from the same link above. Some people have found that v2.5 is better, less buggy; if you go to this link http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=29637&highlight= you can then follow it through to get v2.5.
Then all you need to do is to follow the installation instructions in the Garmin streetpilot for dummies. :D |
