ok im going to my local halfords to pick 1 up in a couple of hours, im using it for a delivery job to find my way round the streets.
im just wondering what i need to do to set it up? does it already have the maps on for the uk?
i also see that i can put a speedcamera databast on it, if i upload this info it wont affect any of the maps will it? |

The maps are installed on a transflash which will already be in the device. By the way, you won't get a CD in the box even though it says so on the outside - but that is not a problem.
It'll just work right out of the box but when you first switch it on it has to load a whole lot of files, including voice files into memory and it can take a while. DON'T SWITCH OFF during this time because it will cause problems.
The safety camera database and the other POI files on MaFt's site won't affect either the maps or the already installed POIs.
It is a great piece of kit. |

Set up is pretty straightforward - just follow the on-screen instructions. Don't panic when it seems to have stopped working after you choose British English for the voice language - it just takes ages to do this bit.
Maps for the UK, Ireland and part of France are already built in - nothing to load up.
What you will want to do soon after is check the software version number by going to Settings About. It will probably be well out of date - there have been some problems fixed in later versions. You can download the latest version from the Garmin website - just plug in the USB cable to your computer after loading the USB drivers from the CD. Updating is very simple - just follow the instructions.
Oh, and if you don't have 2 AAA batteries in the house, pick them up at the same time - you'll need them and they're not supplied.

You can enter the postcode and house number or input country, city, street, house number and yes it will take you down single track roads, or if you go to set up down unpaved roads too. |

"Yes" and "most". Just sit in your armchair and play with it in simulator mode for half an hour, trying out all the features. You'll soon get the hang of it. I'm sure that's what everyone else did!

They come without a CD although it says that a CD is included in the 'package contains' spiel on the bottom of the box (at least, mine didn't along with most others).
Good point you made about updating to a later version of the softare. You (stu3y) will need to go here http://www.garmin.com/support/collection.jsp?product=010-00434-00 to get the latest version plus the USB drivers and the POILoader that you will need in order to load the POI files.
Looks like you can only get v2.6 now although that is a bit more buggy than v2.5 |

Use v2.5 if you can get it unless you are a Dutchman. |

Doug: I bought my i3 from Maplin and it came with USB cable and USB drivers CD. The spiel on my box says i3, pre-programmed TransFlash, suction cup mount, 12-24 volt adapter cable, dashboard disk, USB interface cable, USB drivers CD, quick reference guide.
All were present in my box. If you didn't get the drivers CD, then complain - how are you going to connect to your PC without it?
