|
|
Hi
Not knowing a great deal about GPS I have been reading the excelent advice on the http://www.pocketgpsworld.com forum http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/hot_topics.php and have now just purchased the Garmin StreetPilot i3.
My first impressions upon opening the box was the limited info in the instruction manual!
Before going on the road with the Streetpilot I want to download the latest information onto it from my Windows XPcomputer using the usb lead.
Looked at website http://www.MaFt.co.uk/garmin/download.htm
and also http://www.garmin.com/support/collection.jsp?product=010-00434-00 website to download the Streetpilot unit software, poi loader & usb drivers
Latest Unit Software (v2.50 as of 03 OCT 05)
Latest POI Loader software (v2.0 as of 29 JUL 05)
Latest USB drivers (v2.1 as of 26 AUG 04)
I am now unable to proceed onto the next step given in MaFt website :
The software will automatically start and then you need to browse for your POI folder and follow the on screen instructions.
This is because software is not automatically starting.
Help would be greatly appreciated!

start the poi loader and point it to the file on your computer where you have the poi's stored... |

Hi Zogman,
Start poi from where?
The only POI I can find is the saved file POILoader_20.exe
Opening that starts the installshield setup again.. and simply overites the download!

run POILoader_20.exe and follow prompts...if you got problems its best to uninstall the software and start from scratch... |

Thanks for replying Zogman.
I have reinstalled Poi loader which enabled that to work but the POI Loader says it cannot find the device!
Have tried switched it off/on etc but stuck again!
A message tells me:
"no devices were found.. make sure your device is connected to computer, turned on and try again... you may also need to set the interface option on GPS TO GARMIN or HOST"

i had this problem myself...switch the pc off and restart, then plug in the i3 using the usb cable, then start the poi loader...if it works point it to mafts poi file ....if havent got it yet here's the link http://MaFt.co.uk/garmin/GarminPOIs.zip ..you can then unzip the file and if you dont want certain poi's just delete them (before or after unzip, doesnt matter) |

That's reassuring! I'm not the only one experiencing POI problem...
Got to get to work shortly, no time now, so i'll let you know if your previous advice works....
Cheers

Many thanks Zogman,
That worked! Switchin everthing including computer off and then rebooting.
Uploaded all the poi's from 'MaFt' at http://www.MaFt.co.uk/garmin/download.htm
with no problem.
In anticipation of my next preference...
Could you tell me if and how I can add my own poi's to the Streetpilot in the future?
Thanks for the advice.
Cheers

I load my own POIs by using one of the files from MaFt. Delete all the entries (except one to make sure I get the content right). Go to Streetmap on the web (or if you have Autoroute on your PC), find the POI you want, note the Longtitude and Lattitude and add as a new entry in your own POI file.
Hope this helps |

theres a few ways to do this ..i personnally like to generate waypoints in mapsource then download to the i3..these poi's go into the 'my favorites ' folder rather than the 'food, hotels and more' folder where mafts poi's go.....the only thing is that i believe you need to have a cd copy of mapsource to use it.... |

Any ideas for the best place to buy Mapsource? I have read that sometimes it's cheaper to buy it as a bundle, I think Gekogirl mentioned similar?

'mapsource ' is the the software that downloads the mapping to your gps....you need to look for 'city select europe' or a version called 'metroguide' remembering that 'mg' does not autoroute....city select costs about £150 or so and in the uk only comes bundled as a automotive kit (software, gps mount etc)...unless you are going abroad you can do with the uk mapping on the i3.. |

Thanks for the suggestions re Poi's

I downloaded the full set of Poi's yesterday from http://MaFt.co.uk/garmin/GarminPOIs.zip
With hindsight if ALL of the Poi's are not required in the Streetpilot can they be deleted from the i3 once installed?

gary, delete the poi's you dont want before loading them onto the i3..the new file overites the existing one... |

Hi Zogman,
Thanks for the reply.
Not having map source I am currently experimenting with the tip from 'Tubal' to find Longtitude and Lattitude details from http://www.streetmap.co.uk/
Once I have chose the ones required I will try overiting... |
