I've recently bought my first PDA (ipaq 3950) and have a question about upgrading to 2003. I read in the FAQ's that when you upgrade you lose all data and installed software and that you should back that up first and reinstall. Is that complicated and is the effort worthwhile for the new operating system? |

The upgrade process will mean you have to hard reset your iPAQ - which means it will land up essentially as it was the day you took it out of the box. The only difference will be that after you've applied the upgrade kit, it will now be running Pocket PC 2003.
Unlike ordinary ROM upgrades, my understanding is that the Pocket PC 2003 upgrade reformats the iPAQ File Store (as Pocket PC 2003 is larger, so there's less iPAQ File Store after upgrading).

The main HP upgrade programme web page is here and the one for France here - mais malhereusement je parle un petit peu Francais (apologies if I just murdered your language!). In other words - my French isn't good enough to tell you what's there - but it looks very similarly laid out to the UK page.

Hi David,
Thank you for the link! It's indeed the correct link. Bravo on your French. I didn't realise that it costs US$26 for the upgrade. I thought that for people who had bought their IPAQs within the eligible dates can get the upgrade for free? In any case, if it really speeds up the processor, why not. _________________ Francois |

As is often the case with 'free' Microsoft upgrades, there's a significant shipping and handling charge - in this case, US$26.
The "pay for" upgrade is supposedly EUR49 plus VAT and shipping - though it's also supposedly not available to order in Europe until August (so expect it to become available to order next week).
I will order an upgrade for my 3970 - but I'm not desperate to jump into an upgrade. I've just completely replaced my desktop PC, and I now have two other PCs that require significant upgrading (in one case, a reformat is on the cards...). I'll be quite happy to leave the Pocket PC alone at the moment!
