|
|
The BBC featured a story on Breakfast this morning (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/4439123.stm) regarding the switching on of speed cameras on the M4 between Swindon and Bath that will trigger at 79mph. These cameras do not seem to be on the database.
Perhaps someone who lives in that part of the world get this information to Pocket GPS ASAP and maybe there is a need for a new release of the database before the end of the month with this information |

What I don't understand is..
Quote: | The Wiltshire Safety Camera Partnership is putting marked vans along a 40-mile stretch between Bath and Hungerford. |
This seems to suggest vans will be doing the spped checks, but then...
Quote: | The plan involves installing cameras from junctions 14 - Hungerford - to 18 - Bath - of the motorway. |
So which one is it ?? vans or static cameras ? |

Their website http://www.safetycameraswiltshire.co.uk/approvedsites.asp is not showing any M4 locations.
I recommend Emailing them and asking them, I recently did it with my local partnership (West Mercia) and within 24 hours had a full (and fairly accurate) list of all sites complete with grid references and speed limits. The guy I contacted there was extremely pleasent and helpful.
If you do not get any joy make a request under the Freedom of Information Act.

We can hardly add them until they exist! They're mobile vans on the bridges along that stretch. Which bridges they use we will have to wait and see. _________________ Darren Griffin |

The Wiltshire authority has now released this
"M4 speed enforcement sites in Wiltshire (Please note that the list below describes the location of the sites and not the direction of enforcement. Enforcement may take place in either direction.):
Approximately 8.3km east of junction 17
Approximately 3.1km east of junction 17
Approximately 8.4km west of junction 16
Approximately 3km east of junction 16
At Junction 15
Approximately 6.9km east of junction 15
Approximately 1.8km west of junction 15"
I have also read that the cameras will be able to check vehicle speeds at up to 1km distance so I have placed 70 mph mobile sites 1km from the above locations taking the direction of travel into account. These will be in the next release of the database. That is the best we can do at the moment.

The placing of '70 mph mobile sites 1km from the above locations' seems an unusual step!!
Will you be placing all the 'mobile' locations on the M4 - 1km from the locations?
Having travelled this section of the M4 [on two occassions in both directions] this past week, it seems that the locations are on road bridges[rather than pedestrian or farm bridges].
To mark these particular locations 1 km in advance seems unusual. All camera locations should have a clear straight approach, but 1km before may be on a bend.
As most drivers speed up after a camera location, would they now be speeding up into the 'correct' camera location.
To change the criteria for these new locations will be confusing!
You will be adding two locations one 1km east and one 1km west of each 'actual location'! |

strumble,
In the light of what you have said I will revert to placing the database camera sites on the bridges that are likely to have cameras on them. I have used OS maps to determine which bridges to use as these actually show which roads pass over the motorway. That is the best that I can do at the moment.

Thank you for the coordinates. I have set up 70mph mobile sites on the 7 bridges in question. I use CheckPOInt for POI proximity checking and setting the first warning at 30 seconds will mean that if I am travelling at 70mph the first warning will be at 940 metres _________________ Various TomToms, Garmin eTrex Legend, GPSMAP 60CSx, Oregon 550t, Forerunner 405 |

i travelled along the M4 in wiltshire today, the mobile cameras sites did not come up. I uploaded the database on my TomTom Go last Satursday the 30th of April.
I have had a look again at the GPS locations on one of the xls files today,
the locations you have identified do not seem to be listed in that file
any ideas? |

Here they are in the downloaded xls file:-
-1.80923 51.54025 MOBILE:1518@70
-1.62936 51.51311 MOBILE:1519@70
-1.7502 51.53004 MOBILE:1520@70
-2.0091 51.53397 MOBILE:1521@70
-1.72566 51.52703 MOBILE:1522@70
-1.72387 51.52666 MOBILE:1523@70
-1.96497 51.54644 MOBILE:1524@70
-2.07706 51.51506 MOBILE:1525@70
All you will see hopefully, is the 'empty' bridge!
When you see the van on the bridge it will be too late!
What time on Saturday did you download the database, the new database [3.044] only appeared that day. Perhaps you downloaded the March version which did not contain the 'new' locations.
The mention of these cameras in my previous postings contained 'my names' for the cameras as they were not listed on the database until Saturday. |

Another thought.
I listed my 'new' cameras in one position format and the xls file lists them in different format.
It takes 5 seconds to change the position format to any of 20 or so different formats on the PC and on the iQue. |
