|
|
My son just allowed me a drive in his new BMW M5 with a superlative HUD. Is there a satnav out there that can come near this sort of thing? Comments from people that actually have one (if such a thing exists) would be welcome.
And please, no phone apps. Loath mobiles and the inconsiderate people that use them so don't have one; much as I dislike Ipads and so forth being thrust in my face along with a hand doing a rap dance over their family pictures.
I believe Asus made an effort in 2008. |

I quite like the Garmin HUD BUT it is 'powered' by a smartphone.
I.e. you run either Garmin or Navigon apps on Android, iPhone or Windows Phone and it links via Bluetooth to the HUD.
So yes, it uses a phone (which you hate) BUT the idea is that once you've set up the route on the phone you only use the HUD.
I reviewed it here: http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/garmin-hud-review-rp2996.php

Thanks for that but I wondered why it had to use a phone. I cannot see why projection should depend on another gizmo. |

The HUD is, literally, just a projector. The phone and app are what get the GPS signals and calculate the routing etc.

The HUD is the RESULT of the expensive projector! I am asking why the whole enchilada cannot arise from the projector alone and not have to rely on additional apps and phones as the aforementioned ASUS effort claimed? |

Yes, MaFt, why didn't you design the HUD with an enchilada. C'mon, 'fess up! _________________ Dennis

Well, if we're picking at hairs then I could argue that the HUD is the name of the device (sold as the Garmin 'HUD') so is actually the projector. A H.U.D. on the other hand is a heads up display brought about by a projector

Dunno to be honest! It'd be nice to see one though!

If we're picking at hairs, then may I argue that it should be "An H.U.D. ..." because the H is pronounced aich, not haich.
'Haitch' or 'aitch'? How do you pronounce 'H'?

Hmm. I only know that when you are speaking in an heroic manner, you pronounce it "H". _________________ Dennis
