If I were to use the above type of batteries in my A10, can I charge them in situ from the mains, or is the A10 likely to blow up ? |

As far as I know you you can only recharge the Li-Pol battery via the mains.
Wether it would actually blow up if you tried to charge rechargeables I don't know.

I doubt the built in charger circuit will do anything if it doesn't "see" the SatMap rechargeable pack connected as this uses a three pin plug, the normal battery caddy only provides a two pin connection.
The third connection offered with the Li-Pol pack is for temperature feedback to prevent the device catching fire while recharging by regulating the charge current, without this signal I wouldn't expect the built in charger to do anything at all - Mike |

I only use AA recharable batteries and can confirm that they do not get charged up, neither does it cause any issues when the USB lead is connected. Don't forget that you need to have batteries in to connect to Satsync. _________________ Satmap A10. Platform 09.02.21, Software version 1.50 Satsync 1.50

I've now purchased 2900m AH rechargeable batteries....does this mean that the battery performance of my A10 will be much improved compared to the standard Satmap Lipol 2700m AH that I use, or doesn't it work quite like that ? |

No I don't think it works like that, I beleive that your Lipol battery will still give you a longer life but obviously more tricky to change in the field. _________________ Satmap A10. Platform 09.02.21, Software version 1.50 Satsync 1.50

Is the voltage of the aa batteries the same as the voltage of the lipol battery? If the voltage is the same then I would expect you to get more life from the batteries with a higher mAh rating. In this case about 7% more life. _________________ Paul |

Apologies for resurrecting an old topic but it's the closest one I could find that relates to my question.
Q) Is it possible to safely use an external power source while using AA batteries (standard or rechargeable)?.
My reasons -
a) I would like to conserve the charge in the batteries whilst on a car drive by plugging in a cigarette adapter,
b) Towards the end of a walk and with the AA batteries dying down, I'd prefer to plug in a PowerMonkey rather than faff around powering down, fitting a fresh set of AA's and waiting for a GPS lock.
I know I could find out by doing it but it would be nice to know that something isn't going to go Bang! if I do.
Many thanks,
Ali.
Edit, just to confirm, I'm not trying to recharge the batteries but to supplement them. _________________ Garmin Nuvi 2599

EDIT to above,
Just in case the answer to the above question is "Yes", it is my intention to use a TomTom Ciggie adapter on my SatMap. The output of this is 5v ~ 1.2A, please can anybody confirm the output of the official SatMap ciggie adapter?
Many thanks once again. Ali. _________________ Garmin Nuvi 2599

...the best rechargeables that I use are Intec2900mHr. Excellent for a full days walking in the hot or cold. |

Many thanks for your replies.
5v ~ 600mA is half the TTś rating so I shalln't be using the TT adapter.
I have a set of generic 2900mHr and a set of Eneloops, the 2900's lasted about 4hrs and the Eneloops about 5.5hrs. I thought both sets were fully charged before inserting but maybe I was wrong, I shall ensure a fresh, full charge next time and monitor the life span.
If poss I would still be interested if anybody has successfully used an external power source whilst using AA batteries. _________________ Garmin Nuvi 2599
