Apparently it is rumoured that the upcoming iPhone 4.0 firmware will support multitasking. I wonder if it will be possible to run CamerAlert at the same time as my SatNav app. Would two apps be able to access the gps hardware simultaneously?
Can't wait to find out.

There does seem to be a lot of chatter about the possibility of multitasking making an appearance in 4.0.

We won't know until the dev release of 4.0 is available but fingers crossed.

there's been talk of multitasking since os2.0 was released...

however, apparently this time there are more hints, particularly in the 3.2SDK for iPad which, by all accounts, specifically mentions multitasking and some kind of 'expose' method of switching between the running apps.

personally i feel this may be limited to the higher-spec'd ipad and not the comparatively low-spec iPhone 3G which struggles, at times, as it is without adding extra background processes!! however, i hope i am proved wrong! the rumours i've seen also claim that os4.0 will only be made available for the 3g and 3gs (and presumably the yet-to-be-announced 4th gen iphone) and not the original iphone. perhaps it IS spec-based? or just apple's way of forcing upgrades!

still, fingers crossed! i'd love to be able to use my flashlight at the same time as the spirit level as i often put shelves up in the dark Shocked

You could help me out there - can I bring my wall to Bradford next month for you to put a couple of shelves up on it please?

But isn't cameralert's achillies heal memory related? While 4.0 may allow multitasking, without the extra memory it will still fall foul!

Still worth a test on the bigger 3gs's!

doesn't seem to be - i can run it with as little as 7mb free... the crashlogs we received seemed to point to a different issue. this will be fixed in the forthcoming service release.

Ok. Just got the impression that the size of the open database had the potential to chew up the resorces of the iphone especially in the old ones!

I don't point fingers but Lutz said so! Very Happy

To be more specific lutz was refering to the difficulty the Iphone would have trying to run another resource hungry app with cameralert at the same time. Ok for small apps but everyone is wanting to run this app with some sort of navigation product and that might be too much for the Iphone's memory to take!

Will there be enough memory to run TomTom and CamerAlert on the 3GS? Can I have the perfect SatNav solution?! Wink

Curious to see what the equivalent of Alt+Tab will be on the iPhone...
