I have just received my TomTom Go 300 and cannot get a satellite signal at all.
My car windscreen is slightly tinted althouth I could not say whether it is 'athermic heat-reflecting'.
Can anyone tell me if it is common to not receive a satellite signal.
How long should it take to receive a satellite signal. (I waited 5 minutes).
Do people normally buy the External Antenna Kit ?
Many Thanks In Advance

do you get a signal with the GPS outside the car? If so then you probably need the aeirial. Also the first time you use a GPS it can take A LOT longer than 5 mins to get a satellite fix. If i remember correctly tomtom say it can take over 30 mins the first time? |

Many thanks for this.
I also notice I have a product activation code on a plastic card.
Do I have to register this with TomTom before I can get a signal ? |

Matello,
The device will tell you if it needs an activation code.
Try it outside of the car to see if it gets that first fix.
Also, you might consider a re-radiating antenna. Lifted this from another thread:-

Be careful which external antenna you buy. The one for the TTG classic won't fit the TTG 300. Tomtom are yet to release the one for the 300
Have you tried mounting it on the drivers window? That's where I put mine for a signal and it's easy to reach |

Sorry, what do you mean by drivers window ?
Do you mean the drivers side of the windscreen of the side window ?
I had it placed in the centre of the windscreen. |

I've got a C8 with has one of those windscreens that stop the signal.
So I mount my TTG300 on the drivers window adjacent to the steering wheel . Normally get 4 bars reception |

I've done some more testing today.
I held the TTG300 out of the car and it got the signal.
I then placed it on the drivers side window and it worked fine.
I placed it in the centre of the windscreen and the signal was lost, so I put it back onto the drivers side window.
Then I drove for about 10 minutes and at first the instructions were slow, if fact asking me to turn left after I had gone past the road.
When I had finished the return journey, the signal was stronger and the instructions were timely.
I then placed it in the centre of the windscreen and the signal was still strong.
I wonder if it that it just takes time to 'warm up' and fix onto a strong signal. That could explain why I lost the signal in the centre of the windscreen when I first got the signal, but had a strong signal in the centre of the windscreen after using it for 10 minutes.
NB I was in the same location both times I tried the TTG300 in the centre of the windscreen. |

my 300 was like that when i took it out of the box,
you know what it's like, walked out of shop and it's gotta be on the screen before u pull away to drive home , but there was no signal drove off and still nothing had me thinking they gave me a dud or i needed External Antenna, but it was about 10-15mins later the screen came up colour and showing 4 bars, some times in the morning it can take a minute or so to get a satellite but after that any time it turns off through the day it starts up almost instant. |

The first time you switch on the TTG has to find all the data it needs. It needs to know where the sats are, and which ones are there. This can take a little while, but more so when on the move.
Once it has that data, and you switch 'off' (actually it goes into standby) it has a fair idea what is in the sky and where. If you switch off, and then on in a different location, it might take a few secs longer. _________________ Richard

Have a C* myself, just purchased the addition antenna direct from TOMTOM.
mounted it at the rear of the car, and it works a treat, always minimum of 4 bars. |
