|
|
After his trip to Cannes Tim was lucky enough to get a shiny new TomTom GO 520 to play with. One of the things he has been looking at is the new Map Share facility.
Mapshare is a new technology built into the new TomTom 520 and 720 SatNav systems. The concept of Mapshare is to allow the TomTom userbase to correct errors in the mapping data on their PND, and then share it with the rest of the users.
This new functionality is found in the new TomTom Navigator version 7.x GPS software.
This article looks at the repositioning of one of the built in POIs. Showing how the POI is moved and then how this modification can be shared with other users.

What sort of verification is made that the data is right?
For example is see you can edit the one way systems and add / edit roads. All it takes is for someone with a stolen sat Nav or evil mind to reverse the order of say major routes in London, Glasgow, Manchester etc and there is the potential for problems or even just render the Sat Nav useless.
Before anyone says anything about drivers being sensible and not driving down the wrong roads remember all the stories of people driving into rivers and railway lines....
Even a genuine mistake could prove deadly.
Could this make things worse instead of better?
Edit: Seen you can elect to choose what level of verification you want. Verified by TomTom, edited by Trusted Soiurce, Submitted by many, submitted by some.... |

Paul, also this article is about moving POIs only, not about altering road priorities or restrictions, etc.. But yes, you can choose who you believe. On a personal basis, I'd choose the TomTom and Trusted source options to start with. There will be another article on roads soon(ish). _________________ Tim |

True, but I've been reading a bit on it because i was so pleased someone finally did it. However i hadn't found anything on if the data is verified or not until after i posted the question here. Funny how that always seems to happen...... |

Quick question.
Given this is for v7 and so will eventually drift down to the PDA versions ( I hope! ) I was wondering if any POI can be edited or just those pre-supplied with the device?
I have several set of POIs where the point marked is where the hotel or whatever actually is, rather than the entrance. I'm currently tweaking them by using Google Earth but being able to do it ( or rename them or add phone numbers or whatever ) on the device would be much better. |

A good question, but unfortunately, only Map-provider (read built in) POIs can be moved in this manner.
Is using Autoroute any quicker than Google Earth perhaps? _________________ Tim |

You can't move them, but you can add a new one in the right place and delete the old one pretty easily in "Browse map" on the unit itself (and rename it at the same time if you want). I do that all the time. |

Very interesting Tim, as you have a 520 when are we likely to see a full review, hopefully TomTom will not be restricting you like when the x10 range was released. |

The 520 available to us is not for review purposes as these are pre-production models.
We are currently able to report on certain functional areas, but we are not able to produce a full review until the beta testing has been completed and we have access to full retail devices. _________________ Mike Barrett |

Apparently the map updates submitted via Map Share won't be reported to Tele Atlas after all. Don't delete your bookmark to MapInsight just yet.

I'd been looking for someone to settle the score on this one! So I guess they won't be sharing for the time being. That's fine. Map Insight is already pretty established, so it's understandable that Map Share would need time to iron out the kinks. And I don't think we have to worry about anyone being rerouted into rivers - I read somewhere that they have ways of weeding out the prank changes. |

I think that might be old news, possibly based on a misunderstanding of the original Press Release. The way it's been explained to me is that 'Corrections' those that you can change immediately on your own device, and upload for sharing with others immediately) will not be passed on, but 'reports' (which are not shown as corrections on your device immediately, and cannot be shared with others in this manner) will be passed on to TA. _________________ Tim |
