Events: GPS to Widen The Human Gene Pool?

Charles Darwin LBS BlackLine GPS have announced their new service 'Blip' at the CTIA Wireless 2008 show. It is a free geo-social networking platform for GPS-enabled BlackBerry smartphones that allows users to share their location amongst friends, family members, and colleagues.

Patrick Rousseau, President and Co-founder of BlackLine GPS says "Our Blip platform creates a 'Geo-Society' that enables users to share their location with the people they know". He added, "We are confident that consumers and businesses are ready to embrace this unique geo-social tool that unites social and business networks."

Many other companies are currently involved in creating innovative location based products. Alongside GPS, short-range network based Local Positioning Systems (LPS), such as Bluetooth, radio frequency identification (RFID), TV-GPS, promise seamless indoor–outdoor positioning allowing us to 'see' who is inside buildings and the outdoor urban canyons that GPS cannot cover.

Geo-aware systems will allow you to choose your social activities based on which of your tracked network is in which park, gym, shopping centre, restaurant, pub or club, etc. You'll also be able to track an en route friend who is running late.

Your tracked contacts may choose to advertise that they are currently single and open to approaches. Will they only choose to share their current relationship status with only a select few? The implications are that future generations may electronically reduce their chances of marriage to the wrong person. Perhaps less 'random' relationships will form leading to...
