BlackLine GPS have announced their new service 'Blip' at the CTIA Wireless 2008 show. It is a free geo-social networking platform for GPS-enabled BlackBerry smartphones that allows users to share their location amongst friends, family members, and colleagues.
Patrick Rousseau, President and Co-founder of BlackLine GPS says "Our Blip platform creates a 'Geo-Society' that enables users to share their location with the people they know". He added, "We are confident that consumers and businesses are ready to embrace this unique geo-social tool that unites social and business networks."
Many other companies are currently involved in creating innovative location based products. Alongside GPS, short-range network based Local Positioning Systems (LPS), such as Bluetooth, radio frequency identification (RFID), TV-GPS, promise seamless indoor–outdoor positioning allowing us to 'see' who is inside buildings and the outdoor urban canyons that GPS cannot cover.
Geo-aware systems will allow you to choose your social activities based on which of your tracked network is in which park, gym, shopping centre, restaurant, pub or club, etc. You'll also be able to track an en route friend who is running late.
Your tracked contacts may choose to advertise that they are currently single and open to approaches. Will they only choose to share their current relationship status with only a select few? The implications are that future generations may electronically reduce their chances of marriage to the wrong person. Perhaps less 'random' relationships will form leading to less divorce.
What is for sure is that more mobile dating will occur, the dating industry have embraced social networking with a passion. Will this lead to more marriage or, at least, less long-term singles? Will mutually swiping your NFC enabled phones be the new 'First Base', i.e. the prelude to the first kiss?
Something that Charles Darwin (pictured), the British scientist who laid the foundations of the theory of evolution, might have been interested in is real-time, instant location based dating. Finding possible partners that don't necessarily live in your area, but are being tracked using GPS technology as 'available' and passing through, presents more opportunities and could lead to a widening of the gene pool.
At present, it's natural to seek someone that lives close to you, but with human nature as it is, extra opportunities are often welcomed. _________________ Robert Brady |

Those with already 'always connected' teen kids will already recognise (or not!) the signs Come on guys, let's have a few predictions from you which unusual paths you think LBS is going to lead us down - as it surely will. _________________ Robert Brady |

Nokia brings it one step closer to the mainstream
Quote: | Tap into experiences with the Nokia 6212 classic
April 15, 2008
NFC-enabled handset offers new and easy ways to access and share content
Espoo, Finland - Nokia today introduced the Nokia 6212 classic featuring integrated Near Field Communication (NFC). The 3G handset allows consumers to conveniently share content, access services and information as well as conduct payments and ticketing with one tap of the device. The Nokia 6212 classic is expected to start shipping in the third quarter of 2008 in select markets in Europe and Asia with an estimated retail price of EUR 200 before taxes and subsidies.
"NFC-capable handsets such as the Nokia 6212 classic are set to change the way mobile phone users interact with devices and services in their surroundings," says Jeremy Belostock, the Head of Near Field Communications, Nokia. "With the Nokia 6212 classic, people can swap items like business cards or calendar notes by simply tapping their handsets together. With ever-increasing device functions and services available, ease-of-use is essential. One way to keep things simple is NFC."
Near Field Communication is designed for intuitive, simple and safe interaction between electronic devices. By tapping an NFC-enabled tag, consumers can receive new content such as weblinks, audio files or contact data directly to their phone. |

Maybe this is a prelude to Gattaca rather then first base. All we need now is DNA analisys in our cells phones - "I know your single, in my town and your genes are good, lets do it..." |

Is this evolutionary step going to stop those numpties driving down railway lines or rivers?
A computer surely only as smart as the person operating it, so i guess the answer will be "NO"
Perhaps, what we really need is something "designed for intuitive, simple and safe interaction between electronic devices and blondes" _________________ Andy

Why? There's nothing that says males can't be blonde, is there?
...and there are a lot of men who have 'blonde moments', so there were no sexist undertones intended in my previous post. _________________ Andy
