Old Airports POI

When I upgraded to TTN3 the POI files were updated too! The new Aiports POI file no longer contains small airfields, which is something I used to use quite frequently! Does anybody know how to obtain the TomTom provided POI file for TTN2?

Hi Alevans,

I don’t think that you can use the inbuilt POIs from a previous version of TTNav. Sad

However if you go to the PocketGPS World TomTom POI page. Then scroll down to the United Kingdom section you will see two POIs that might be of interest for you, they are: Airfields and Airports. Thumbs Up

Thanks for the reply, sadly the two POI files on this website aren't quite upto the job (no offence to the contributors). They put the airfields in more or less the right place but not near any roads so navigating to them is sometimes a bit tricky! Airfields are quite large items but they usally have an entrance at least from the public hightway!

Sadly it requires a visit to each airfield to establish exactly on which road the entrance is situated!

Tomtom customer support have been less than supportive!

Hi alevans,

This is just a thought, but if you used an online map like Streetmap, or Multimap.com, etc. then you might be able to deduce the entrance and take the co-ordinates off the map, without needing to visit each site first. I did this last year with a set of POIs and when I recently visited them I found that they were spot on within 50 metres.

I prefer Streetmap as it gives both Longitude & Latitude and Ordnance Survey GRs. Thumbs Up

One thought that occurs, which is probably a little dodgy so far as licensing goes, but is probably fine for your own use, is to reinstall Navigator 2 and extract each point in the old POI. Simply go to each point in turn, and create a new point in your own POI category. Make a backup copy (or six after all your hard work!) of your carefully created POI file, then switch back to Navigator 3 and install the file you created.

I wouldn't have thought TomTom would be overly concerned about your extraction the POI data if its is better than that in TTN3. If you wish we can clarify the position with TomTom and if they're happy we could then make the data available to all?

That would be great!

In simple terms the airport POI's supplied with TTN3 are only the major airports e.g. Manchester, Heathrow etc

In TTN2 the airports also contained a large number of small airfields which, unlike the the 3rd party files, were correctly located with respect to road access.

If TomTom can make them available it will alllow people the choice:

Major aiports only as supplied with TTN3
or
Smaller airfields as supplied with TTN2

I can only assume that it wouldn't take TomTom very long to extract the info from the original POI.dat file into an OV2 file.

There is an airfields overlay file available (try PoiSync) which has some of the more obscure ones. Useful for finding trackday venues ;)
