Following on from the GO upgrade
TomTom have now announced the upgrade process for TomTom MOBILE here.

Unlike GO there will be no free application download, instead there will be a flat rate Euro 79 charge (excluding postage) which includes the application and the latest map data on an RS-MMC, MMC or Mini-SD card of your choice. All owners of TomTom MOBILE with a valid product code (this is printed on the credit-card-sized product code card which came with your TomTom MOBILE navigation product) will be eligible for the upgrade.

No GPS is included but version 5 does add support for any NMEA compatible GPS receiver.

The new version is a great improvement and with the new map data adds full Post Code lookup, the version 5 Mobile review can be found here.

This seems expensive, £59 for the upgrade plus postage. That's almost 50% of the original cost! Can't see why you can't download it. Tom Tom could charge a nominal fee to cover costs.

Bit annoyed after only having TTM for a couple of months before the upgrade appears.

My thoughts exactly. Why not sell your BT GPS unit on eBay (most seem to go for £100ish) and then pay the £60 to get TTMv5 when it comes out (making an assumption that it will be ~£160 :D )

Of course you don't HAVE to upgrade but I do feel I need to re-iterate that this is a far better offer than any other manufacturer makes. Most others charge the full cost of the software when a new version is released, no discounts whatsoever. Given the new map and an expanded feature set in the app (and for me the PostCode facility alone makes it a much better product) then taking it all into account the upgrade is a pretty good deal.

If they had offered the app as a free download and the map as a seperate purchase only offer then the PostCode function would only work with the new map data as GO owners have discovered. In reality the app is effectively free and it is the map data and OS licence for the PostCodes that you are paying for.

Half the time users are complaining about the lack of available map updates and then when they are made available.... Wink

I have written before that the map data costs account for a very large portion of the entire software cost so its not unreasonable that TomTom have to charge the end user.

On a seperate note, the SiRFIII receivers are currently £150ish on their own so it will be very interesting to see what TomTom Mobile 5 with the Leadtek/TT SiRFIII BT GPS retails at.

Darren,

I don't disagree with you that it is a much better product; I might sell my current one on eBay and get the new one (inc that nice, shiny new rx). Depends how much it is. So a wait and see I suppose Smile

OK fair enough about the costs - I will probably pay for the upgrade but I am agrieved to pay £60 for it. Anyway a question on TTMv5:

When enabling traffic on existing TTM all the POIs dissapear from the mapview - this is a known problem with TTM. Disable traffic and they reappear - any idea if this is fixed with TTMv5 as its a major problem in my mind? Thanks

I am using Traffic on Mobile 5 and haven't seen this issue so it would appear to be fixed.

I think the price is fair.

New software
New maps
New Memory-card

Whats the value of the memory-card itself !?

price for a mmc card is a average of £10 - £15 delivered

so my rough breakdown on the price of tomtom-mobile 5 upgrade is

mmc card £15
v5 maps / software £35
postage £10

total £60

which i think is a fair price especially when you look at the price broken into sections like the above,

many people would have prefered a download option
which would be even better if tomtom made it so ya could buy as a download option of say £35 + £5 admin fee`s
