We've recently got TTN2 and are finding it temperamental, so we're a bit nervous about relying on it.
If we find that we can't trust TTN2, can we go back to TTN1? If so, what is the exact procedure for "downgrading" to TTN1? |

First of all did you upgrade to 2.02. This should now be OK. What problems have you been experiencing?
You can go back to Navigator 1 but you will have to remove Navigator 2 first. It is probably a good idea to delete the map info as well. Then reinstall Navigator 1 and then copy the map segment of your choice to your storage card. By the way you cannot use the map data for Navigator 2 with Navigator 1 and vice versa.
Hope this helps

Thanks for your help.
Yes, we have 2.02 and have still had satellite fix problems. We're going to carry on trying TTN2, and are hoping that we shall find we have been worrying unduly.

Hugh, Generally most fix problems are due to external causes, local interference, ionosphere, the only problems in general that you can control is making sure teh receiver is out in the clear, and it's less likely to receive rebounded signals from buildings or foliage. Software generally has very little to do with interference, as the software 99% of the time is in receive only mode apart from the initial handshake to open the com port. If you're always having problem or start having problems at one location, it can be localised due to other RF interference, as GPS signals like radio communications all come in on the RF Spectrum (1500mhz). There could be other localised devices transmitting on or near these frequencies, eg Radio Ham operators.
The GPS driver could have something to do with it, sometimes selecting NMEA, the com port and the baud rate can sometimes help. The Pocket PC won't usually cause interference.
Check out Darren's article on How GPS Works as this gives a very good insight into how you receive GPS signals, and what can cause problems. |

Thanks, Dave.
We had few problems with GPS in the few weeks that we were using TTN1. We've had TTN2 for 4 days now and only one opportunity to try it so far when it failed to get a fix, so we've had time to think about problems.
Hopefully, when we get out and use it more (which will be soon) we'll find the difficulties are not as great as we fear. We'll report back!

Make sure you're using the Emtac driver and not Crux, as a few people have reported problems with that driver.
BTW, saw some photos of Buffy and yourself . Like the campervan! |

If we choose "GPS status ..." in TTTN2's File menu we see the following options: Emtac Crux GPS, Emtac GPSJAQ and Emtac Wireless GPS. Emtac Crux GPS is the one that's highlighted. Are you suggesting that we should try one of the others? Is Wireless the same as Bluetooth?
We've put TTN2 through its paces in the last few days, so are no longer concerned about reverting to version 1. However, thanks for all your help.
We think it might be helpful to write some positive comments about our experiences with TTN2. "Reverting to TTN1" doesn't seem to be the appropriate heading for them, so we'll start a new thread. We'll call it "Positive experiences with TomTom Navigator version 2"

Hmmm. We're intrigued. How did you blow our cover?

Hugh, the one I have selected is the Emtac Wireless. Bluetooth is a form of WiFi (Wireless), transmission, just on different frequency bands (in-fact still on the same bands as some of the networking WiFi gear you can buy).
I picked up the photos out of your email address when you mailed me (your website address is the same after the @ sign). A little obvious |
