On more than one occasion I've downloaded the latest CamerAlert database to my iPhone and checked that the two figures (server/device) tally, only to find e.g. the next day that the figures no longer correspond and I have to download again (I'm not talking about the regular weekly updates).

Every time that the DB Admin (MaFt) updates the camera database during the week, that update is immediately available to CamerAlert users. Others have to wait for the usual Wednesday release.

Oh, so it happens at irregular intervals during the week? That might account for it... though it's happened again this morning. I downloaded the database, but now a few hours later it's saying Server 19.044 (47190), Device 19.044 (47165)! Maybe there's something else going on....?

Hi willmow,

There's nothing sinister going on.

At this moment (Wednesday 5th May 2021 at 11:45 am) the server is:
19.044 (47188)

As I said before, the camera DB Admin (MaFt) constantly updates the master database of the cameras. This includes adding new ones, modifying existing ones (location, speed, direction, etc) and removing cameras. These cameras are all around the world and not just in the UK.

Wednesday is the traditional day that the camera DB Admin 'flicks the switch' so that the master camera database is propagated to all of the databases for all devices, e.g. TomTom, Garmin, etc.

However, as a CamerAlert user, you don't have to wait until a Wednesday for an update as the CamerAlert database is directly synched with the master database. Effectively, as soon as MaFt makes a change in the master database, the CamerAlert database is updated. All you need to do to get the latest database is to manually download the database.

If I'm driving my normal route to work I have CamerAlert running with the same weekly database on the device as the server (currently 19.044). However, if I'm taking a new route (especially on a long journey) I update my CamerAlert and get the very latest database just to be sure.

I hope this helps to explain.

BTW the new database will be 19.051 and should be released sometime today.

As Privateer says. The submissions get processed on a daily basis. When you download in the app you get a 'live' version of the database. The figures shown are correct at the time of the main database release.

Hope this helps?

Many thanks to you (plural) for the explanation. The reason for my enquiry was that I was trying to find an explanation for a rogue 50 mph camera warning on the A40 westbound (nowhere near any other 50 mph warnings on other roads nearby). If I get to the bottom of it I'll initiate a new query.

Roughly where? A quick Google tells me the A40 goes from London to deepest, darkest South-Left Wales... I'm not following the map the whole length to see if there's anything I can spot!!

It was in the SPECS section after Hanger Lane westbound, but exactly where I can't say right now. There's nothing on the PGPSW map showing any ghost.

You've submitted a number of cameras around there. I am wondering if it's a submission that is stored on your phone and not been cleared?
If you go to Manage Cameras in CamerAlert it may say 'Own Cameras' and have an option of 'Remove Own Cameras' or words to that effect - try that and see if you still get the issue.

You could zoom into the 'we need you' map to see if there is a wrong camera showing.

I've just had a look and the nearest 50 is a Specs on the North Circ but I can't see that being picked up.
