Then why are you complaining about it? |

Thought I'd resurrect this thread by asking if anyone knows why, when inputting a postcode destination, the unit sometimes gives me four alternatives for just the one postcode entry? I can upload a screen shot if required but the alternatives are often miles apart! |

Probably because that postcode covers a large area? _________________ Where there's a will ... there's a way. |

Screenshot would prove/disprove the theory. Or perhaps share the postcode so that 'we' can check on ours. |

For a VERY long time I have been getting increasingly despondent about my Garmin's routing abilities. I mostly find the issues when abroad with our motorhome. With the Garmin set to fastest route I find on 90% of journeys that when take an obviously different turn at a roundabout I am rewarded by an immediately earlier ETA by around 10 to 20 minutes. I had a very typical example recently in the UK on a trip from Carshalton to Burnham on sea. There are two main choices for this journey - A303 or M4/M5 and M4 wins on time. To reach the M4 there are also 2 obvious choices once having reached the Chertsey junction of the M25 - M3, then via Bracknell to join M4 just east of Reading or continue around M25 to the M4. My Garmin told me to go via Bracknell.but I decided to keep to the M25 as it was flowing well. As soon as I had passed the M3 the arrival time became 20 minutes earlier. Yes, my chosen route was a few miles longer. On the return journey the device wanted to keep me on the M4 all the way to the M25 despite a significant predicted traffic delay - so I came off the M4 earlier and went via Bracknell. In both directions I believe that I saved a significant amount of time by making what to me were obvious choices between two of the nodes. A further irritation on the return journey was that, totally inexplicably it wanted me to leave the main road to go through the town centre of Bracknell - further and slower. Ignoring that took another 7 minutes off! I despair - that sort of routing is indefensible.
WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO GARMIN'S ROUTING. IS IT THE MAPS OR THE ALGORITHMS? |

Have you ever master reset your device? It's worth doing after each software update and particularly if you're getting weird results. _________________ Where there's a will ... there's a way. |

I've seen quite a few responses from Garmin on other forums that advise performing a full reset (as above) because map updates can cause this type of issue.
I've also seen replies to the above Garmin advice saying 'problem solved'. _________________ DashCam:

Each time a master reset is performed, the unit has to learn the users' preferred type of road all over again and any blocked roads have to be set once again but I have to say that I think Garmin are poor learners as they still send me down types of roads I don't wish to! |

I have not consciuosly doe a master reset, thoug with the last map update that i did (2019.10 sent out in 2018 and based on 2017 data!!) turned my road sped limit signs to the US format - so I need to.
BUT IF THT IS NEEDED THEN WHY DOES THE UPDATE SOFTWARE NOT WARN USERS TO BACK UP THEIR FAVOURITES AND THEN DO IT AUTOMATICALLY - or at least ADVISE USERS TO DO IT AND TELL TEM HOW TO?
The answer to my question has to be sloppiness by Garmin! |

Same with many PC and Mac issues, a complete reset solves them but hardly ever see it advised anywhere. You will be advised to do it by Garmin Product Support if you contact them about any issues though. I suspect the reason it's not automatic is due to two reasons. It can't be done automatically/remotely and would therefore probably create more problems than it solves. Garmin used to allow their devices to show all files in a folder named Garmin, but then folks messed with them creating issues. Next they placed critical files in a system folder but users worked out how to access that and then created issues. Now instead of mass storage mode newer devices connect in mtp mode, which requires additional steps before users can get at critical files, but many still do and then wonder why they brick their devices. So while there are many like you and I there are lots of inexperienced users out there so in general it's kept simple
Incidentally don't worry about the map scheme numbering. Generally Garmin maps are pretty much up to date, two recent major road layout changes were on the map update that followed their opening and the new French speed limits were included a few days before the change over. _________________ Where there's a will ... there's a way. |

Master reset done and I now have a UK speed limit sign again. I did check locale before resetting and the unit WAS set to UK.
I do wonder whether odd routing may be a consequence of ticking Traffic Trends? Or not? |

Ah yes, the traffic trends issue that can perform unnecesary rerouting off clear roads _________________ DashCam:

If you have a unit with traffic trends I'd turn it off. It was an idea that never really worked well and is no longer an option on newer units. _________________ Where there's a will ... there's a way. |
