Arianespace successfully launched four more Galileo satellites on Wednesday. Liftoff from the Guiana Space Center, Europe’s Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana took place at 0825hrs (local time).

The first pair of 715kg satellites was released 3 hours and 36 minutes after liftoff, with the second pair separating 20 minutes later.

This marked the 99th mission of the Ariane 5 heavy launcher and was carried out on behalf of the European Commission as part of a contract with the European Space Agency (ESA). It also was the last in a series of three launches for Galileo using the version of Ariane 5 with a storable propellant upper stage (ES).

Interesting to note that had Galileo been able to use SpaceX's Falcon 9s instead of Ariane they could have knocked $3.6b off the cost.

As Galileo is a project the EU chose to paid for by money skimmed of the Command Agricultural Policy surplus, it has no interest in making any savings, which would have to be returned to the EU member states. Hence, also the complete lack of concern that the project has cost many billions more than the initial budget.
