If you've used POILoader to populate the SD card and the end result is being able to see the xxx.GPI file on the card then it could be a matter of going through the units menu to see if you have to put a tick or check next to the POI category to activate it.

I javen't noticed any previous comment about selecting active/non active POi's

Hi Kremmen.
I reckon I have pushed every button there is, explored every option.
The SD card shows the .gpi file is on it, but the Garmin just cannot see it. (Reminds me of a Spec Savers TV ad') Perhaps I should say, pointing finger: It's over here !!

But I don't think that will work either.

99% sure it's a breakdown in communication. Will need a dealer sort out.

Awaiting a reply from dealer, my PCP is ending soon so might be inclined to help as they will then want to sell me another car. Rolling Eyes

Sometimes this can be a simple matter of formatting the SD card to another 'format' then going again.

Try FAT then FAT32, never NTFS or ex-FAT for car units.

Once formatted use POILoader again, then when complete check the SD card for where it's put the file amd post back here exactly where it is.

Something like Garmin/POI/POI.gpi

I have formatted one card as FAT
File structure
Garmin\POI\Bowls Clubs.gpi

I have formatted another card as FAT32
Same File structure
Garmin\POI\Bowls Clubs.gpi

I got an email from Kenwood via the dealer:

Quote:

Yes it is possible to add custom POI.

Your customer is using the POI Loader software which is the correct method.

Maybe you could pass on the below information just I case there is something different that the customer is doing:

After running the POI Loader, the SD card should have the following folders and file:
Garmin/POI/poi.gpi

Note: if the card has anything other than the above, then run POI Loader again and make sure to name the file ‘poi’ during this process

Once correctly loaded onto the SD card, insert the card into the GVN60 and leave it in – on this model, the card has to stay in.

Regards

KENWOOD Customer Support Team

I then made a 3rd card, formatted to FAT
File structure
Garmin\POI\poi.gpi

Not one of the three cards worked in the car, I was in a 'map' screen as required.

I have ordered another cable........ Sad

Can you define the above 'doesn't work' please.

On your device, try "Where To" ~ "Custom POIs". Do the bowling clubs show there? (Menu options might be a little different.

1. What are you expecting it "to do"?
2.What is it "doing"?

M - I did a Google on "Kenwood Garmin GVN60".

One of the hits is 'owners manual rg-sound' it's a PDF and page 42 shows that POi's work exactly like our units with the 'Where to ~ Categories ~ Custom POi's' being the actual command structure.

When I put the SD card in the socket nothing happens on the GVN60.

The manual on page 42:
Quote:
...After downloading your POI database, use the Garmin POI Loader to install the POIs onto an SD card. Use the SD card to load the POIs.
NOTE: The unit may restart when you insert an SD card.
Finding Custom POIs:
You can view a list of custom POI's loaded in your navigation system.
Select Where to? / Categories / Custom POIs

Somewhere I have read I need to be in a MAP screen before loading POI's

On my device there is no 'Custom' POIs option shown to be able to select it. I assume that is because I have not actually managed to load any? The only BOWLS are Garmins own 10 pin bowling alleys.

What do I expect it to do? Recognize the SD card and load the POIs.
What is it doing? Refusing to recognize the SD card.

Thanks for the low down on that trapper.
What you must bear in mind about my apparently inane questions is that I don't have your satnav, so don't know what to expect when you plug the SD card into it. Crying or Very sad

But I do know what to expect on my Honda setup (Garmin satnav) and my DS 61. Very Happy

My main ignorance of your system is that is it meant to upload the POIs from the SD card onto the main device, or are the POIs accessed direct from the SD card. If the latter, it is obvious that the SD card has to be left in.

You seem to have done everything right as far as getting the gpi file in the right place on the SD card, so I give in. Confused

Gentlemen.
We, but mostly you, have gone far further than could be expected, for which I thank you both.
When I get the new cable and have made an appointment with the dealer I will take a range of SD cards along with me so we can try them all in case there are any oddities in file format or structure. FAT FAT32, Bowls Clubs, poi, etc.
When we get to the bottom of the problem I will post it here.

M. Sometimes I do question my sanity, I thought that when I retired I would have some spare time, relax and take it easier, how wrong I was.....

Doesn't it say in the manual that all 'your' POI's go into "poi.gpi"

I was following the ReadMe.txt from M's zip file. In which he has provided a very good Excel spreadsheet that does all the work for me. Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

Part of the ReadMe says:
Quote:
2. Writes ot the data to a CSV file called 'BowlsClubs.csv, arranging the fields in the correct order for POILoader.

Then comes the loading onto the SD card, that ends with:
Quote:

Click 'Next'
The POIs should then be loaded onto your SD card as \Garmin\Poi\BowlsClubs.gpi

I have tried as above and as:
\Garmin\POI\poi.gpi

Neither version was 'seen' by the Garmin Satnav. I must say M has gone way beyond what I could have wished for and I cannot thank him enough.

You might just try FAT32 and Garmin\POI\poi.gpi, to complete the testing options.

So when you say 'not seen'

That's means that when you press Where to - Categories - Custom POi's, there is nothing there ?

Thanks, I did that one later, same result. Sorry to say.

Just been to the car, selected Where to? There are categories listed; restaurants, art, recreation, lodgings, Petrol Stations etc etc. But there is no heading or mention of 'Custom POIs' listed.

I am sure the problem lies either in the installation or the connection of the extension cable or the cable itself.

May I ask, to those that are using a Garmin Satnav and even better the same GVN60, what format do you use, FAT or FAT32 or ??.
Also, can you have two or more 'Custom POI's' For example Bowls Clubs and National Trust locations, and be able to select either as a heading in the Satnav? I ask in the assumption that at some point I will be able to install any POI's that is.

The SD card in my own Garmin satnav (freestanding) is formatted FAT32. (I have just checked !)

Yes you can have lots of categories of Custom PoI on your SD card. Certainly I have !

In the PC folder that PoiLoader looks at, I have lots of matching pairs of .csv files and .bmp files, for each of my desired categories of PoI (eg Accommodation, Attraction, Bookshop etc). [So there are Accommodation.csv and Accommodation.bmp and so on]. I got these PoI's from this PGSW site !

Now, on the satnav, when I go to Where to - Categories - Custom POIs, I can see a nice list comprising All Categories, or Accommodation, Attraction, Bookshop etc.... And if I select one of those categories, I can see a nice list of those entries, in order of the nearest, so that I can select it as a destination.

[The PC filing system can be slightly less simple than this, if you have seriously many categories of PoI, but we can ignore this for now].

Dales.
