Hi,
our venerable Garmin 1490T has just given up the ghost this morning. plugged it into the PC and it won't fire up.

So it looks like we need to replace it.

What is currently the best system to have? we don't want to use phones as we want a unit we can swap from vehicle to vehicle .

we have always had garmin , but are open to other brands.
we were looking at the Garmin DriveAssist 51LMT-D 5 In Full EU Sat Nav Dash Cam.

thanks in advance
Rich

Have you had a look at the DS 61LMT-D.
It's only a tiny bit bigger than the 5", but has a much larger screen, no dashcam though.

I had a DriveAssist ............ for 24hrs and took it back.

They have mounted the camera centrally so the Garmin ball is on the edge. That means it flaps about, especially on less than perfect roads, and causes noticeable vibration.

The end result is extremely shaky footage.

Your call though if you want to test one Smile

DS 61 LMT-D would be well worth looking at IMHO, Its a bit bigger than a 5" but has nearly 7" of screen due to the very narrow bezels. Pair that with a Nextbase dashcam. One with GPs for position recording as well as picture/sound.
Kremmen has a lot of experience with Garmins and I would always take what he says as correct.

The other problem with the DA is location. You have to find somewhere to put it so that the dashcam bit has a clear view of the road, but it must not obscure your view. A rather difficult compromise. Whereas the dashcam can fit behind the rear view mirror and the satnav can go where ever you want it to providing it's not obscuring your view.

Tip. Order and pay for it on line and pick up from store. You then have the added protection of the Consumer Contract Regulations on your side if you decide you just don't like it.

As far as DashCams go, I'm running a Nextbase 380GW. Courtesy of a Nextbase contact.

So far, compared to their 'dashcams on sticks' this one is 100% rock solid and far more discrete due to a total redesign.

Currently they are only available in pairs from their commercial site but they should be available later in the year from Halfords.

If you can pair with a friend though you can buy 2 to avoid waiting.

Reading the other thread is quite interesting re the 380 gw. We have 3 vehicles so would get 2 cameras and see if i vould get another mount.

The 2 x 380's would come with 2 mounts. 2 complete units. I doubt you could get another mount just yet.
When they are available the only place would probably be TVandDVDSurplus which is a Nextbase sister company.

So far I've been very impressed, but, I've not had chance to see how it performs in bright sunlight. My old 402 didn't need a polarising filter but the 412 did.

Only had it just over a week but so far so good.

The lack of vibration is very noticeable compared to other units when you look closely at the parked windscreen wipers and dash. Rock solid, even over cobbles.

well that got strange last night, pressed the on button for 5 secs? as i had done earlier and it powered up and took the map updates???

Still think we are going to replace it, but the urgency has gone a little bit.

Think we will also grab a dashcam for each of the vehicles aswell.

cheers all for your help.

Whatever Garmin you chose, the key bit is "LMT-D", especially the D.

That gives you the best traffic, updated every minute and covers all roads.

This is the kind of advice I like. As a beginner, nothing more complicated than this makes a lot of sense to me Laughing Out Loud. Cheers, Kremmen!

Thought the 1490 was fixed but it is not. We took it out and the maps are just not functioning correctly. I wonder if there is too much info for the unit to cope with now, or the format has changed slightly, so I have just bought the DS 61LMT-D. Is there a how to guide on getting the favourites from my old one to the new one? Is there a way to transfer camera alerts from one garmin to another? or am i best just to subscribe to the ones from here?

If you're a subscriber it doesn't matter, no need to resubscribe, files are exactly the same.

As for favourites copy the file named current.gpx from the GPX folder in your old device. Place it in the GPX folder of your new one but rename it anything but current.gpx

Boot your device and check your data is there, then delete that file you transferred as it's no longer required and will cause issues if you leave it there.

Incidentally my old 1490 still works perfectly well so your problem has nothing to do with maps etc.

i got a notification end of last week there was another map update for the 1490, duly plugged the device in and it said there wasn't room to install the update. Looked like the SD card wasn't in properly. Pushed it back in , ran the update which took about 1 1/2 hours, longer than the last update. Took it out over the weekend and it is now working fine. So it looks like i pulled the trigger on a new one a little quickly, we do however have more than 2 cars so it will be handy going forward to have a device per car.
