I've added an edit to my post above re: map updates.

I think the most useless feature of ALL I have ever used is "shortest". Takes you through villages instead of the bypasses etc.
All of my previous programmes have been on handhelds HP being the 1st or smartphones since the O2 XDA Orbit. I use to prefer TT over Copilot even when Copilot was bundled in with the phone contract.
I use my SatNav when motorcycling. Deffo avoid motorways bup want the fast empty ish back roads. This can only really be achieved by using itineraries and way points, but what a pain in the arse! In particular when planning a route where a lot of roads are unnamed.
Planning on a laptop and transferring to the SatNav is a must in all honesty.
Google search which my NDrive had, but now doesn't found places easily when names or addresses couldn't.
THE. Most useful feature for me would be avoid ALL major trunk roads where practical and allow the route to be modified from a suggested route like Google or Copilot used to do by dragging the planned route to a different road(s).
Currently using Sony Z1compact Route 66 and Ndrive V11.4.06.
Blimey, had to edit T W A TNav to SatNav!

I agree, I also prefer a shorter route but not through villiages and B roads.

When I let the Nav plan the fastest route from Heathrow to Malvern it always tries to take me almost to Birmingham on the motorways.

When I turn off the M40 onto the A40 to go via the Oxford bypass and it recalculates, the mileage drops by about 30 miles and the time by about 15 mins or so, so it got it wrong in the first place.

Ask for the shortest route and it goes into stupid mode as mentioned above.

Also, as mentioned above, I have Mappoint on the PC and that does a perfect job of using a shortest algorithm that keeps to sensible roads.

I was put off buying a new model but finally succumbed after been offered maps £59 and live services £49 for my Go750 live, so decided a new model with lifetime updates would be more viable.
I took the plunge and bought the go6200 and must say how pleased I am with this unit.
I travelled recently from north-east to the south-west coast and across to France doing around 3000 miles and cannot praise this enough over my earlier model. I like the fast updating speed and 3d views in some cities.
I can use itinerary planning through Mydrive or combined with ITN convertor to plan routes in advance and it accepts 3rd party poi's I believe in ov2 files.
I like the way it updates itself through wifi and you can touch the map directly to place road blocks or stops(waypoints).
Has Tomtom listened and made a good device?

You still can't add our cameras.

But no associated bmp file or sound file, so you are left with a blue dot in the screen which, you can't differentiate between the other blue dots on the screen. Also no proximity alerts, so they have listened, but only with half an ear open, then lost interest.

You can use fastest route, just select reduced speed and enter something like 68mph and the planned route will be a bit more sensible.

Well .. this is a depressing thread! My GO Live 1000 has virtually zero battery life and the map subscription has now expired. TT offered me 20% off a Premium 5" and I was certainly tempted. However, I have the iPhone app and it's so limited that I was wondering whether the new models were similarly incapable. It seems that they are. Shame..

I guess I'd better stick with what I've got - I guess I can manage with no battery (it lives on its cradle, anyway) and out of date maps for a while. I'm not sure when my traffic sub runs out, that might be a killer as it's not cheap to renew but I do rely on it a fair bit.

Is Garmin better? My brother swears by his (but he lives in Canada, so I can't easily borrow it to play with)

Will they actually sell you a Traffic subscription renewal? Surely cheaper than a "new as seen on TV" rubbish device.

They've been offering EVERYBODY discounts to buy their latest stuff, don't feel priviledged!

My GO520 has just died. I struggled with it for ages whilst it still had map updates until a month ago, because it had a very dodgy power switch, for which I eventually had to carry a watchmakers screwdriver to switch it on and off. So keep your 1000 going for as long as you can, plugged in - remember, there are zillions of TomTom owners out there who never update their maps. Some of them may be the ones who go down river beds and into swampy fields, but many don't.

My 520 finally started switching itself off after a few hours running and I had to retire it as I do a lot of long distance work. Now I have to rely on my rubbish GO6200 and my slightly better built in Renault R-Link TomTom - neither of them as good as the 2005 model GO520, only beating it when they had LIVE traffic.

My GO (the box calls it a Camper) which I bought online from Halfords October 2021, is behaving a bit naughtily sometimes - reboots in the middle of a journey, doesn't switch off when power supply ends (ignition). So I thought of getting yet another new one.

Halfords local stores no longer have anything better than the bog standard utterly basic models.

TomTom now no longer sell an all singing, all dancing model, which is to say thay have discontinued the built in SIM and the only way of getting HD Traffic is via your smartphone. I have no idea how much this costs on your phone contract, but it's a bad idea for anyone doing regular day-long driving - in the last four days I've driven 1100 miles, three full days and a big half day. That's a lot of data connection on phone contract. No great problem for me I suppose, as I have a contract with unlimited minutes, texts and data. But it's yet another drop in provision by TomTom. Checking my box, I find that my SIM provision is actually to "until 2G service is discontinued, or five years from first usage".

I wonder what it costs (data) to run GO Navigation on an iPhone?

Hi Dennis,

I've been using TomTom GO on the iPhone since it was first released (my records indicate 11 February 2016) in that time it has improved. Traffic is good and with CamerAlert in the background (yes CA still works on an iPhone 12 Pro 512 GB, running iOS 15.5 and an iPhone 6s Plus 128 GB, running iOS 14.8.1) the setup is OK.

The only thing that it doesn't do is custom POIs for which I use the POIViewer iOS app, which costs £4.49 as a one-off:

https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/poiviewer/id364906423

No idea how much data the traffic uses.

Regards,

Thanks Robert. I’ve bought the iPhone GO thingy, but honestly, I don’t use it except occasionally blue moons. I really can’t convert myself from landscape to portrait. But most of all, my business relies on phone calls and I don’t fancy the idea of conflict between phone and navigation instructions. Imagine trying to cope with the nightmare of London and suddenly the satnav disappears behind an incoming phone call. London is scary enough without that!

I run my iPhone 6s Plus (biggish screen) in landscape orientation and without a SIM.

All you need is a old spare iPhone (on your Apple account).

My iPhone 12 Pro is my phone and also podcast player. It has a SIM in it (O2 SIM-Only Contract with unlimited minutes and texts and 100MB data). The iPhone 12 Pro is a mobile hotspot for the iPhone 6s Plus running TomTom Go with live traffic data.

This setup has done me well for over a year.

Regards,

if you have a newer car that supports AA and CarPlay, just use that with your phone.

Data wise, the app doesn't use a log of data, I was running the android version on a sim-only contract that had 200mb data a month and I think it used less than 20mb a month

I agree

I'm now running Google Maps in satellite view via Android Auto on my cars centre large headunit. The routing algorithms are far better than both Garmin and TT and the satellite view looks far better.

I'm surprised at the very sparse camera coverage that Google Maps have. On my regular journey from London to Reading we have dozens of cameras but Google only have 2 and these are only announced with a meaningless 'bong'

I'm still running my Garmin DS61 just for the traffic bar that shows the yellow and red sections. I was considering a newer Garmin but the publicity shots don't show this traffic display so I'm keeping the DS61 and I recently replaced the battery as it was running almost flat in just over a week if not used.

All this plus Speedtrap Alert running via the cars audio system and my car is tech city Smile
