Since TomTom told me my satnav was obsolete but released new models without custom POI support I bought a Garmin Nuvi 58lmt which I was told supports custom POI creation.
It does in a limited way although it's favourites rather than POI's. While you can import custom POI's what i wanted to do is add my current location as a POI to a category.
I've worked out how to do it using favourites but I can't seem to add all my old tomtom POI's.
The file "Current.gpx" on the device appears to hold the category information, I tested this by adding one of the favourites I have to a category, then took the "current.gpx" file off the device onto my PC, converted it to xml and added the code of the category to all favourites but then the favourites don't appear in the categories when I put the file back onto the satnav.
So, does anyone know where else the category info for favourites is held on the device? Obviously it must be somewhere else than just the current.gpx file. |

You need to use POILoader with your POi's as a CSV entry(s).
You can either have your POi's each in a separate folder, or, if you have multiple POI sets then you can have a master folder, then a series of sub folders, each one containing a POI set. This route means one POILoader run rather than one run for each set.
If you use the single, master, folder route, then make sure the cameras, if you use them, are in the top level or they will be truncated.
The end result will be a series of GPI files in the POI folder on the device. _________________ Satnav:

current.gpx is simply a one way copy of what is inaccessible to the user. You can delete it and it'll simply be recreated next time you boot your device. To add favourites you must send them as a gpx file to the GPX folder but named anything other than current.gpx ... your device will merge any gpx file other than current with what's already loaded and then write a new current.gpx.
Of course if you use BaseCamp this is all done for you. _________________ Where there's a will ... there's a way. |

Am I right in saying that using this method means you can't simply add POI's in future though, as you can with favourites? |

The problem is that using basecamp means every single time you wish you add a location you must go get the computer, find the location on the map, add it tot he file and go through the whole rigmarole of adding the file.
Is there anyway to add a gpx file which already has the categories in it which match the ones in the favourite folder? |

If you want to add a gpx file you need a PC anyway. But yes, as I said above you can just place a gpx file in the GPX folder of your device. _________________ Where there's a will ... there's a way. |

If you use the sub folder route then you add any new POi's CSV data into the existing file(s). Next time you run POIloader they will be sucked in as a replacement.
So you could have a top level folder in Windows called POI. Under that you could have a subfolder called 'garden centres', another called 'macdonalds' and so on. In each folder is a CSV file with the data.
When you run POILoader you aim it at the POI folder and it will suck in and process all the files in the sub folders.
Simpler then it sounds. _________________ Satnav:

Adding to that you don't need to use POI loader to load files to your device. If you have a poi file you can just copy it to the POI folder.
I tend to use poi files created by others or if I create some, eg the speed camera files, I use POI Loader to create the file on my PC and then copy it to my devices. _________________ Where there's a will ... there's a way. |

Thanks for your help guys, but the problem remains that if I am on the road and find a location I want to record, I must jot a note about where I am, wait til I get to a computer, find it on a map and get the co-ordinates, then add those to a csv file and transfer that to the device. Barmy no? |

The way you describe it, yes.
If you are frequently finding and adding new places then the CSV route could be overkill. _________________ Satnav:

Barmy yes but that's not a POI but a favourite. You can add those directly on your device. _________________ Where there's a will ... there's a way. |

Can you later 'get them off' as a file? |

Get what off
If you mean individual favourites no, unless you use a program like BaseCamp, but all favourites will be in current.gpx _________________ Where there's a will ... there's a way. |

You're limited to 1000 favourites and also if you already have hundreds like me, you've to add them all in manually and assign them categories manually and assign symbols manually...I daren't even think how much time that would take. |
