Open the photo, there is then a box called 'share link' on the right hand side. Will begin with [IMG] ... copy that link and paste it into your post. _________________ Where there's a will ... there's a way. |

Thanks for the methodology Sussamb
The mystery dotted line clearly shows here - but how my 1440T reverted back to a Europe map of last year (2014.40), during a failed update, and gained this dotted line, which won't go even though I am now on 2015.40 I have no idea !!
cheers

I would say that's a screen fault and unconnected despite the coincidence with the update. _________________ Where there's a will ... there's a way. |

Further to my piece about the dotted line on screen of my Nuvi 1440T, now two dotted lines on screen, one just below the first one, I contacted Garmin Support and they have told me:
"Hi Allan, thank you for emailing Garmin Europe.
I am happy to help.
The dotted line you are seeing is a pixel line which means that your inner screen is damaged and the device will need to be replaced.
Below is the link to our website where you can purchase new products:
www.garmin.com
I apologise for the inconvenience caused."
So I wrote back stating:
"Thank you – but what caused the damage as the first line appeared after a failed update, and the second line appeared by itself later?
What effect will it cause on the working of the unit as it works no differently now to before the lines?"
Has anyone else come across this problem - I don't exactly wish to shell out for a new unit unless I really have to.
cheers

I wonder if a factory reset would fix it if it's software related? _________________ Satnav:

Certainly wouldn't hurt. I suspect the fact the line appeared when Allan updated though is pure coincidence, and a second line would seem to indicate a hardware issue.
If it's still working though it's a question of can you live with it? If so that's what I'd do.
I have the odd failed pixel on my laptop, it happens, although if there was a line of them that might be more difficult to live with. _________________ Where there's a will ... there's a way. |

thanks Gentlemen
I can certainly live with the lines - in fact with two of them I can actually read between the lines!!
Seriously - they only show up on the black boot-up screen, and then faintly on the night screen and are sufficiently low enough not to cause grief.
I can do a master reset and see if it clears it - but as they say it is pixel related I don't suppose that will clear it, even though the first line appeared after an update, which was probably a coincidence as Sussamb states.
cheers

Gentlemen
I did the master reset on my Nuvi 1440T- and it made absolutely no difference to the screen, the lines are still there.
So I must accept it as a pixel problem, and hope it doesn't get worse.
thanks for your advice

The device probably has a built-in diagnostic for the LCD ...
Hold the "Battery icon" - top-right-of-screen - for about 5~8 seconds and you should be taken to an internal diagnostic screen. Keep hitting "next" until you get to the 'boring' stuff - whole screens of Red, Green, Blue, Grey etc.
(I don't have your unit, so the detail may vary - sometimes, it's the "time" that you have to hold down, rather than the battery icon. Either way, it's best done using your thumb, so you aren't pressing any of the area around the icon.)

thanks Phil
A bit like Star Trek - boldly going where I haven't been before!!
On my 1440T it did indeed come up when pressing the battery icon, and it had lots of interesting stuff, but after reaching the screen piece the lines were still visible in every colour but white (and of course they are still there if you look hard enough!!), but I couldn't see anything to make a screen test for that sort of thing.
I don't know if this indicates anything, but one thing I did notice was that I had three green battery cells showing when I started and about 10 minutes later it had dropped down to one, but a quick plug in of the charger soon bought that back up to three again.
This could of course be normal as it is not something I would look at generally, just making sure it is fully charged before using normally and I don't usually leave it on outside of the car for any length of time.
cheers

I suspect your battery is past its best, but provided you don't want to run it for hours without being plugged it that shouldn't be an issue. You can get replacement batteries but actually replacing them isn't simple
That aside I don't think that is the cause of your lines though. _________________ Where there's a will ... there's a way. |

Hello Sussamb
I had a further response from Garmin earlier:-
Hi Allan,
Thank you for emailing Garmin Europe.
I am more than happy to help.
There is no reason as to why a failed update would cause the line you are experiencing.
As suggested by my colleague, this is a broken pixel line inside the unit's screen.
As a company, we are continually innovating and striving to design the next product. This is so that we can continue to offer cutting edge technology.
With the advances in technology, none of our products can be made future proof and eventually will become an unsupported/discontinued product at some point and this is what has happened on this occasion.
The device you require is no longer in our stocks and due to it now being discontinued we do not plan to manufacture any further devices of this kind.
We will, however, offer troubleshooting and technological support through our Contact Centre if required.
