Currently, if you're flashed by a speed camera catches in France you will only face a fine if you're stopped by French police and issued with an on-the-spot fine. Police do not follow up speeding offences detected by cameras in other cases where the vehicle is registered in the UK because Britain opted out of a 2011 EU directive.

But that's all about to change. A new directive means that Britain, along with Denmark and Ireland have until May 2017 to begin enforcing it. That means that police in other EU countries will then be able to access details of British vehicles and issue speeding fines.

With half a million British drivers flashed by speed cameras in France last year it means a lot of them could be facing a hefty fine if caught in future. During the summer months more than half of the cases detected by speed cameras in France involve foreign registered vehicles.

This is one of the EU directives that make sense to me. And it takes away Britain's weak excuse about not being able to access the details of foreign drivers caught flouting the law here, so we should start to see some realistic income from the erroneous ways of foreign drivers. Very Happy

As Skumba says, its only right that full reciprocal arrangements should be in place if we really are part of a European Community.

The excuse that it, like European Arrest Warrants and other information, isn't perfect due to the difference in legal systems is a nonsense. Like our own Government, there is a massive bureaucracy in Brussels and a lot of negotiations take place before even draft Directives or Regulations are published. UK needs to engage better in the process rather than using the media to complain too late.

I did, as a representative of a European Trade Association and got virtually all the changes and clarifications we needed for 7 years in 90's. UK HSE refused however to get involved as the official UK representative !
