I am looking for a GPS device to use in mountain walking and climbing which will give me the accumulations of all the height gained and lost during a day in the mountains. This means an addition of all the sections of climbing and an addition of all the sections of descending. I have a Garmin Etrex 30 but this device only gives me so called 'total elevation distance ascended' and the 'total elevation distance descended' which turns out to be not the same thing at all.

Can anybody suggest a handheld GPS device which will give me an accurate measure of accumulated height gained and lost.

Sad to say that I think that the best solution is a smartphone with GPS facility. It doesn't have to be the latest-sooper-dooper phone just any phone that you can load different apps on to to return the results you require.

I use Ride with GPS and JogTracker on my phones and they seem to have the info you are after.

However, whatever Solution you go with, Dedicated GPS or SmartPhone with apps, be aware that altitude is woefully inaccurate. I have a SatMap A10 and a Smartphone and I used to constantly recalibrate them for my Home altitude (7m). The results following a walk either put me underwater or way above the highest hill. If I do a circular walk i.e. start and finish at the same point, I have invariably gained or lost about 50m.

If you want more accurate +/- measurements, upload the track of your walk to a web site and work it out from there.
