I decided to test the accuracy and any variation between the above devices
Using both I zeroed and set trip, after a short walk the viewranger registered 6.35 miles taking 1.59.05, the Garmin was 5.34 taking 2.00 , a difference of 1.1 miles
I consider the results from the Viewranger to be the most accurate
Any ideas on why such a variation

Possibly due to loss of or the sensitivity of the gps signal reception. Are you able to zoom in on the traces of your walk on both devices? If so, is one device showing a nice, smooth trace of your walk while the other is a bit jagged as it jumps around due to a bad satellite lock.?

Why do you consider the viewranger the most accurate?

I use both a GPS and Viewranger on a smart phone, and generally there is little overall difference when following routes, although the GPS is more accurate when determining an exact location.

Perhaps the OP knew that he had walked 6.35 miles. If the GPS location jumps about, surely it will indicate a greater distance than you actually cover?

Correct, it's rare for a GPS to 'under read' hence my query Wink
