Anybody heard that Novus has gone bust? The website has disappeared (but I haven't looked since the updates stopped). Just goes to show just how much "free lifetime updates" are actually worth Laughing

Unfortunately Blair's Talex still seems to be going, with his outrageous update pricing structure (48/year).

The original Talex was quite good and seemed to be fairly accurate. Blair allegedly had some dubious business tactics and the Novus database was hopelessly out of date.

You're far better off (and safer) getting a cheap PND and using the database here.

Hi, I haven't used them for several years now. For my low milage they were not too bad around here, they stopped updates just around the time West Mids police switched off all the film cameras Smile I still had a link and clicked on it out of curiosity to find nothing there.

I just wanted to point out the irony of "free lifetime updates" as a business strategy providing a worthwhile database. But these type of hardware based units are probably out of date now anyway with smart phones and other options. I did used to like the accurate mph (and other) readouts though Wink

Thank you for that cheerful thought - I've just bought a TomTom with free lifetime map updates. Rolling Eyes

Is there any recommendation for PNDs? I've already got a factory fitted satnav which I hardly ever use unless looking for a specific address, so a voice system warning for all speed and speed traps would fit my safety needs.

As above, get a cheap Garmin or TT and use the cameras from here.

As Kremmen says, but it sounds like you want a low maintenance option. Try to seek out a cheap PND with auto on/off with your cars ignition, connect it up and tuck it away in a glove box. You'll just need to remember to update the cameras every now and then.

I agree, CameraAlert is good and is directional.

My problem is that I have a tiny phone with a pathetic speaker (WildFire S). When I get the chance to upgrade next year I'll be taking this into consideration.

The advantage of using my Garmin is that I have it hard wired and it comes on with the ignition.
Note: My car is parked securely at home and at work so leaving the Garmin fixed is OK. Shopping trips and it gets disconnected and comes with me.

This morning my wife has had an email from Adam Blair (3, Fortenay House, Ongar Road, Brentwood CM15 9GB) with a link to a video on Talex Wikango Max.

Surprised? Not really. I ran the video during which it mentions hundreds and thousands of French users. Apparently Adam has not heard that it is a criminal offence to operate such devices in France, but hey we may fall for it. The launch is supposed to take place on Nov 5th. Maybe he will be going up on one of those rockets.
