I go on a RIB in the English Channel to go SCUBA diving on.

The Garmin GPSMAP 298 typically works well but sometimes it and the backup Garmin next to it, both open to the clear skies only get four sats and thus only a very inaccurate fix which is no good for finding a wreck.

Thus I was wondering if other gadgets are known to clash with the signals e.g. depth sounders, microwaves from radars and of course smart phones.

Of course, the GPS devices may also just be knackered and thus I have been looking how to get all the way points off it.

However, Garmin no longer sell the data cable / mains power pack and those who do have it want £57.00 plus for it.

Garmin code 010-10276-00 & 010-10276-01

It also uses none standard memory cards and thus also wondered if anyone knows how to make a RS232 cable or which pins are needed to export waypoints?

Many thanks.

What are the 'non-standard' memory cards? Can you post a photo? What's not standard about them?

Maybe an obvious question, but as well as any possible interference from OTHER equipment, have you tested for whether the two satnavs are upsetting each other?

I remember in the early days of TomTom testing, that if I put two units too close together, it affected the GPS reception on one or both.

If you switch one off, does the other improve?

Google came up with a couple of results for RS232 Garmin cable.

Amazon have a PC to Garmin RS232 for £16.68.
No idea if it what you need, but thought would mention it.

Many thanks for the tips...

The memory cards are 64Mb and only fit Garmin gadgets from that era (2006).

The socket on the unit back I think is 16 or maybe 18 pin.

Even with all other devices off it does not seem to work well so a new Garmin GPSMap 750S is on order and I suspect it will be a manual task to enter all the waypoints either on a pc and then to the new device or direct.
