Have another look on your TT and I think you'll find there IS a normal "filename" there, BUT further down the alphabetical list - the ._filename goes right to the front.
On my TT, I have a text file which I download from pgpsw and put into my text reader area on the TT. When I go to read it, there are two there, one with the dot (TT can't read it), the other is OK.
Read up on how to clear out the dot underscore files - follow Oldboy's link. _________________ Dennis
I also downloaded and tried gpsbabel but when I ran it, it gave me an error message and file conversion failed.
However, I'm going to try some of these sites again in a more methodical way to see if I can pinpoint the problem: but what I was hoping was that someone would tell me "yes, i used this method and it worked just fine"
Thanks again for all the useful comments - much appreciated _________________ TT GO app on Android Phone

Dennis, only 1 file was transferred (see my earlier posts) and only seemed to acquire the .filename when on the TT. I've checked and there was indeed only 1 additional file on the TT, not 2 (good idea though!) _________________ TT GO app on Android Phone

Dennis, I'm using a Mac, and I assume .exe files are Win only (and yes, I could use Boot Camp and buy Win7 or similar, but.....) _________________ TT GO app on Android Phone

OK chaps, here goes....
It turns out that one of the 'test fles' (and now I'll need to ensure exactly which route created it) did indeed produce 2 files on the TT, one with the .filename and one without type. The 'normal' file works just fine. Er, sorry (hangs head in shame)
And as it turns out, the easiest way for me to get rid of the .filename is by operating my TT and then using 'manage POIs - delete POI category'.
The reason, by the way, that I wanted to do this conversion is to make life a lot slicker when downloading POIs, because the limit of 20 sub-categories for .ov2 is right royal pain in the backside: I so wish this could be fixed! So my plan was to download everything as garmin csv and then convert.
Some mor experimentation will be happening......[/b] _________________ TT GO app on Android Phone

POI sub categories. WHY? F'r example, do you need the subcategories separately identified as a POI set each? F'r example, ATMs, does it really matter which one, they all do money? Fuel, sure I did hear of somebody who refused to deal with anything other than Shell Megga Mix or something, but for most of us, it's Petrol or Diesel, whichever pump it comes out of. Etc, Etc. _________________ Dennis

OK, I hope this is one last question.....is the TT unix OS case-sensitive ie will ATM_PGSPW.ov2 link with atm_pgspw.bmp? _________________ TT GO app on Android Phone

Dennis, no, I don't need separate sub-categories, so for ATMs, accommodation etc I just search within that POI category. But my understanding (and experience) tells me that if I just tick 'Accommodation' and try to combine everything in there, it will fail because there are more than 20 sub-categories eg different hotel chains.
Or am I missing something very obvious and mis-reading the instructions? _________________ TT GO app on Android Phone

See notes item 4 and try ticking "Combine subcategories into category file"
(Get me, advising abouty POIs and all I ever downloaded was public toilets - it's an age thing).
PS Now that I look at it, I think that doesn't work - I don't usually read instructions (and when I do, I don't usually read them properly). _________________ Dennis

Dennis, it most definitely doesn't work. Combining 20 or more sub-categories for .ov2 just results in a failure to download, so just ticking 'Accommodation' and telling the site to combine everything in it, fails. And that is so frustrating because it can happily do this for garmin .csv.
It means that I have to trawl through each POI category and decide which I want and which I can do without (and then find that I really, really wish I'd chosen the one I discarded.....)
Why the difference between .ov2 and .csv???? Please, please can someone fix this? Or is it some fundamental problem with the file structure?
The trouble is, the .csv to .ov2 conversion can't be done as a batch, filenames need re-typing to match the .bmp files, and it's almost enough to make me consider Garmin software for my next sat nav, because with the death of Google search on TT, I often rely on the pgspw POIs _________________ TT GO app on Android Phone

I don't know the exact number it fails at, but it's not 20....
When I download the "Fuel" category, I tick everything except anything for diesel, fuelcards etc.
I just counted and I'm ticking 23 sub-categories to be combined into one .ov2 file, and it manages that every time. _________________ "Settling in nicely" ;-)
Of course, since I upgraded to Mountain Lion, my Parallels works when it feels like it (which is rarely) and POI Edit is one that doesn't! _________________ Dennis
