|
|
Hi,
Anyone advise me please?
My current Tom Tom is the 1005 8gb internal memory model, (Used space 4207.28 - free space 3250.66), with an SD card slot which is currrently home to a Kingston 4gb SDHC card, (Used space 23.32 - Free space 3694.36). I have the latest App 12.055.
I have been waiting for the Caravan and Camper map to be available to replace my present standard Europe map. It is now available on the TT website for £55.97.
https://www.tomtom.com/en_gb/shop/maps/#deviceSelected=GO%20LIVE%201015
Under the Europe Middle East and Africa map, use the drop down box to select 'Europe Camper.' It's 2453.3 in size.
Before purchasing this camper map has anyone experience of upgrading to it rather than purchasing a ready installed caravan and camper Tom Tom? Just looking for any possible pit falls such as loss of favourites or other niggles etc. I would also be interested to hear opinions from users as to how good or otherwise it is.
I would be much happier upgrading blind if I could just backup my 1005 beforehand ...just like my 720 and classic TT's which are still working just fine.
Thanks. |

I wonder what will be the advantage to you of a Caravan and Camper map? In my complete ignorance, I thought it would only be of use in a device with the necessary software/firmware to take advantage of Caravan/Camper features, namely the GO Live Camper & Caravan model.
I can't persuade the TT webpage to show me the Caravan/Camper map. Correction - I've just found it under the GO Top Gear Edition model. I was thinking it probably wouldn't install to anything other than the CC Model, but if they are offering it for the Top Gear model, it must be installable. Unusual. Is there some indication on your GO that it might offer caravan/camper routing? _________________ Dennis

Hi Dennis,
Thanks for posting.
Some time ago when TT brought out the dedicated TT for Caravanners and Campervans, (at quite a price!), they promised an app upgrade and a map on SD card or download for the newer TT's so they could become caravan and camper navs. In effect it has take a year or so.
This link should explain it:
http://uk.support.tomtom.com/app/answers/detail/ (link edited 10.1.13 - instead Google search on ''Can I use Camper & Caravan features on my current device? '').
(To find map purchase area go to TT Support|maps|Discover somewhere new - Travel maps|(Red box) discover somewhere new|Buy a map.))
My 1005 does not presently show any screen where one might choose the type or height and length of the vehicle being driven (as per the dedicated TT camper model), but I have been given to understand that these options would show once the device recognised the relevant camper map. You need app 12.00 or higher.

There's only been one post that I've seen about the camper/caravan model. It seemed to suggest that the software for this model was more stable than the 100x models. So I'm wondering if this plan is a bit of a risk, but very interested to see what happens if the OP goes through with it. _________________ Mike R [aka Wyvern46]

OK, looks like it'll work then. Being a new map as opposed to an upgrade, I'm guessing you'll lose stuff like favourites. May I suggest you look into converting your Favourites into a POI category and saving it off on the computer - sorry, not having a Nav3 device I don't know how to go about this - I'm sure you'll be able to find it somewhere in the forum (or somebody - e.g. Andy_P - will be able to sort you out). _________________ Dennis

Hi Dennis,
POI's are strange things on the 1005. I took the advice you give for my Tom Tom 720 because I would loose the favourites everytime I replaced a map. Initially I just backed them up and then restored them but eventually decided to follow advice given by TT themselves and turned them all into POI's. Another advantage was that you could have more POI's than Favourites stored. So when I got the 1005 I created a POI called Favourites and laborously entered the GPS co-ordinates for my many favourites. When I went to test them I discovered that the 1005 will only show POI's within a certain distance of your current location. Cant remember how far ...but I think it was about 120 miles. So if your in liverpool and want to go to a POI in Lands End its a non starter as they don't show up. So back to standard Favourites I went. The big prob with the 1005 is that you cant see the files in explorer on the PC. Apparently some problem with Microsoft objecting to the use of FAT32 file system. So I can't do a cut and paste back up of anything. Perhaps someone has more knowledge of this than myself and would be happy to be corrected for presently I know of no way to back up a 1005 which is worrying! _________________ 'On the banister of life may the splinters always point in the right direction! No need to convert your Favourites to POIs on the NAV3 models... when you run "Add Community Content" you can save your Favourites to PC directly as an .ov2 file and load them back as one too. The only thing to remember is that they need to be called "Favorites.ov2" (with the US spelling).
Oh, and I agree... the search radius restriction for POIs on the new models is a complete pain!
I have all my family members stored in a simple POI group, and now it looks like I have several fewer relatives.
The one plus point is that it says my mother-in-law doesn't exist! _________________ "Settling in nicely" ;-) |

Hi Andy,
Thanks vm for that info. I have now saved my favorites to my PC, (right click on the MyTomTom icon in the system tray with TomTom connected to PC).
Another step in the right direction towards gaining confidence to install the Europe Camper map! Guess everyone is waiting for the first brave one to try it out. Bit more digging around first me thinks.

I have an old TomTom 950 Live with reasonably up-to-date maps. I don't know what the newer versions are like but can't you do the following:
Navigate to... | Point of Interest | POI in city (then select City/Town/Village) | POI Category (then select actual POI)
Then you can still navigate to POIs further away than the limit from you location. You still can't list all POIs in a POI Category on the TomTom unit, if you want to do that then use PoiEdit (Windows PC) or an online POI editor.

Hi Privateer,
Thanks for your post.
I created a POI folder called Favourites which contains varous locations such as Grand Hotel - Llandudno, or Mums - London. I tried your suggested sequence and I can get to Llandudno. Upon selecting Llandudno my POI custom Favourites folder appears along with other options such as 'Search by name', 'Petrol stations', 'Restaurants' and a 'more' option*. Select my custom Favourites folder and I can then see the actual POI within that I want - I am presently no where near Llandudno.
Sequence:
Navigate to - POI - POI in city - Type Llandudno on screen keyboard- Select Llandudno from list - 'Navigate to' option screen appears showing my custom POI's folder (and those options in para above*.) Select folder and there it is, Grand Hotel - Llandudno.
Good workaround thanks for that, but Navigate to - POI - Select POI would have been nice. Can't see why Tom Tom have set such a small POI radius ..But I suspect they didn't have the favourites To POI's workaround in mind when they did it, just the places you might look for in your near vacinity.
Thanks again.
Still searching for anyone who has installed the Europe Camper map :o( . _________________ 'On the banister of life may the splinters always point in the right direction! 'Tom Tom Classic, 720 and 1005 Europe 8GB with SD slot. Brodit Mount. |

No problem, glad to be able to help.

Totally agree with you.

It's probably a resource thing, i.e. CPU speed. There are only so many favourites but each POI category may have 1,000s of individual POIs. When you Navigate to a POI, the unit lists the nearest ones (in any direction) first - this will take a lot of processing for 1,000s of POIs. It could be helped by faster processors but this is TomTom that we're talking about!

Sorry, can't help you there. Hopefully somebody else can very soon.

Yes you can certainly do that, but it's a lot more faffing around.
And there are times when I want to go to somewhere but have no idea of the nearby town names.
And it should be totally unnecessary as the old models can do a full search of the entire POI file without any difficulty at all. _________________ "Settling in nicely" ;-) |

OK so although I have picked up a couple of useful tips in this thread, no one appears to have tried the new map. Also posted in the Tom Tom forum without success.
Well someone had to be first, so I put on my ruby slippers, clicked my heels together three times and said ‘there’s no Nav like Tom Tom’ and purchased the Europe Camper Map!
So how did it go? To give a better picture here is a recap on the specifications for my Tom Tom, PC and broadband:
Tom Tom: 1005 8gb internal memory model, (Used space 4207.28 - free space 3250.66), with an SD card slot housing Kingston 4gb SDHC card, (Used space 23.32 - Free space 3694.36). I have the latest App 12.055.
Operating System: Windows 7 Pro 64 bit using Microsoft Internet Explorer 9. 8gb RAM. Connection via: USB 2 Hi Speed connection. Screen saver disabled and programs not in use closed. Kaspersky operational. Broadband: Orange Broadband operating at 3.3Mbs.
The Europe Camper map is usually £79.95 currently on offer at £55.97 – however, My Tom Tom opened in the sys tray when browsing the shop and offered a code for £5 off Tom Tom products thus reducing purchase price to £50.97. The purchase process was simple enough and a receipt was duly received by email which included download instructions. Should have been able to continue the download with an auto redirect from here …but nothing happened. Consequently went to My Tom Tom manually. The v9 Camper map was waiting in My Tom Tom under manage content. New Items Europe Camper v9.007 – Size 2.4gb. Clicked download at 1723hrs. Download completion time shown as 1.52.00. Updating. Available memory now shows Device - used 6660.96mb free 796.98 and Memory card - 23.32mb used free 3694.36mb. Download finished at 1903hrs. 60 second delay then install commenced with the usual instructions not to disconnect the device. Count down shown on PC screen and TT was 45 minutes to install completion. Completed at 1933hrs. Concluded with Navigation device may now be disconnected. 1723hrs to 1933hrs.
My original Europe map was not replaced. The Europe Camper is an additional map. To activate it go to | Settings | Right screen arrow to ‘Switch Map’ | Select Europe Camper Map. Now you need to input vehicle details. | Settings | Right arrow until new icon – ‘Vehicle and routes’ | Vehicle and route types | Car with Caravan* | Enter Weight, Height, Max speed, length, width and weight per axle. Done! Select route in usual way. No Favourites or POI’s were lost during this process. I can switch back and forth between maps without a problem but really no need as you can simply select car instead of car with caravan, or Camper or Van*.
I have run some test trips in demo mode and all seems well so far! HD traffic operational, Voice control operational and all menu options seem to function normally. I have also been able to download from map share. I will be testing ‘live’ in next couple of days but so far looking good.
Phew…hope this helps someone else.
p.s. I took digital pics of the process showing most steps. _________________ 'On the banister of life may the splinters always point in the right direction! 'Tom Tom Classic, 720 and 1005 Europe 8GB with SD slot. Brodit Mount. |

Excellent news!
Thank you for
1. being brave enough to be the guinea pig
2. writing it all up so comprehensively.
3. proving it works!!
I think there will be a LOT of people who would really want this map.
TomTom should be shouting this news from the rooftops, but I bet they don't... _________________ "Settling in nicely" ;-) |

Thanks for that Andy. Your right of course, if I had not happened upon the above link I would still be waiting.
Here is an interesting article which should answer everyone's next question as the answer had me scratching my head for a while ...GVW's and GAW's!
