One warning, we left Te Anau at about 10:30 in a camper and just made the last trip at Milford sound at about 3:30 what with the road and things to see on the way.
Also going to Franz Josef, Lake Matheson(Mirror Lake) is only a short drive.

Here is one of my photos

Reminds me of the experience of driving the Icefields Parkway in Canada: with all the 'wow' stops it literally took around five hours longer than it should have. Your photo is reminiscent of the Parkway too.

Noted. The current fixed stops and outline 'attractions' are:

Auckland + Sky Tower
Paihia + Hole in the Rock + Haruru Falls & Mangroves
Whangamata
Rotorua + Hell’s Gate + Pohutu Geyser + Waimangu Valley thermal area
Napier + Cable car, Lambton Quay – Kelburn + Marine Drive Tour
Wellington
Nelson + Abel Tasman National Park
Punakaiki + Pancake Rocks & Blowholes
Franz Josef
Queenstown + Skyline Gondola + Skippers Canyon Jet
Te Anau + Milford Sound + Doubtful Sound (Not sure if DS would be worth the trip)
Dunedin + Otago + Oamaru
Christchurch

A good selection - 'tho some might use Whangamata as just a coffee stop or drive direct to Rotorua from Auckland

Napier could be considered a bit ho-hum if time is limited

I have been back to the Kauri museum at Matakohe several times - it gives a unique and fascinating insight into NZ's past - www.kauri-museum.com/

The route north from Auckland can be a slow grind with HGVs etc on the Northern Motorway - an alternative is to loop westwards on the more scenic and quieter SH16 - at least as far as Wellsford

The only issue with NZ is the need to keep going back for more!

Would agree with this Napier is ok but not really a lot to do and although we have been twice we would like to go back again, although I don't think we could do it in a car, there is so much to see and at least if you are in a camper you can stop whenever and wherever you like, because a lot of the places you want to stop don't have cafes or toilets

I suppose it's all about compromises: car v camper, this stopover v another. There's always going to be a regret or two once we get back home but, from what I understand, none about having being there.

This is turning into a Lonely Planet type post(!) but if you are going to Rotorua and want to escape the Japanese invasion look out for the AV/sensory show at the old convalescent hospital (think it is run by NZ tourism) where you experience the events of 1886's massive earthquake that forever changed the local landscape - very very well done. Gives your Hell's Gate tour a bit more perspective
