I gather dear Mr Clarke is going to put up the min penalty for speeding to £100. This has rekindled my interest in safety camera alerts. I'm not arguing that PGPSW has the most accurate d/b, but I'm hankering for something that updates as soon as I turn it on and only requires me to pay the annual subscription. So the question I have is which is the better maintained d/b RA or Aura?

Perhaps you could ask on their own user forums?

And, does it really matter how quickly it updates, if the data is poor, out of date or simply wrong?

If you have an Android or IOS smartphone, then our CamerAlert app offers more functionality, a map, instant updates and more, might that be an option?

Thanks MaFt. The answer seems to be to buy neither.

Why are so many forums rude about people wanting a speed alert? Have they never heard of/experienced a loss of concentration?

Unlike you young chaps on here I'm not really the smartphone generation and having retired have no busy life to keep up with [is this Tuesday or Saturday?], just a payg to check I'm buying the right things in Sainsburys..

Though Android is interesting, I think I'd have to pay more for a contract, than a connected subscription to a camera detector company?

A bit "curmudgeonly" there guys!

The PGPSW database is certainly good enough to stand on it's own merits without censoring discussion of other systems.

Not at all. You could get an Android phone that's GPS capable for under £100 all in on PAYG. That's a lot less than any connected Road Angel will set you back let alone the on-going subscription you'll be lumbered with.

But, FWIW, I've heard very bad reports about Snooper's database. Of the two it'd have to be Road Angel.

I don't think there was any censoring. MaFt's post was certainly sound advice. Mine may have been a bit sarky but certainly not from

No argument:

PGPSW is the best database
I'm a bit of a technophobe
Also a bit lazy

No need to apologise, it was like being savaged by lambs.

Thanks Darren need to brood on this for a while.

As a pointer, the Android phone I'm referring to is an Orange San Francisco II. A £99 smartphone that is an update the MKI which has been very popular.

Internet, email, camera etc and a GPS for £99 on PAYG.

And if you're not an Orange customer, it's unlockable very easily and free of charge so you can insert the SIM of your choice. Add our app at 69p and a subscription and you're away.

When you have finished being broody, you will come and tell us what's what won't you Love it

@Darren. I'm with Orange PAYG. I might just have a look at that phone for myself. Good tip.
@Guivere. I'm an old codger as well, but it's the first time that I have been compared with a lamb.

Got the MKI here and bought one for my father. He's a luddite but loves it as he can use the on-screen keyboard in landscape mode which gives him a big QWERTY keyboard to type on when composing SMS.

It's sold by the pallet load because it's a pretty decent handset and at the sub £100 mark it's excellent value for money.

I'm a real Luddite when it comes to mobiles (I actually had one with Bluetooth once but I put it in the washing machine so I'm back to one which makes calls and texts, NOTHING else).

But I must admit I'm tempted by that Orange San Francisco.

I'm on Orange PAYG, what's a ball park for how much it's going to cost me a month on PAYG over and above my normal call charges (minimal)? I just feel I might end up spending more than one of the ~£28 contracts

Or is it 'how long is a piece of string'?

I use GiffGaff (An O2 spin off) on PAYG. A £10/mth GoodyBag gives you Ultd Data, Ultd txts and 250mins of calls. Never needed more than that. And it's truly unlimited data.

The San Francisco is ludicrously easy to unlock and de-brand as well.
